Just wondering if anyone from NW Indiana has taken their child to Southlake Center for Mental Health for behavior counseling? (I know it's called something else now, but I don't know the new name)

And if so, how were the results?

It was suggested to me by Riley's Children's Hospital and I'm a little skeptical of SCMH because they mis-diagnosed both of my brothers in the past.

Any suggestions for there or anywhere else would be greatly appreciated!! TIA!!

Luckymom,
First of all, I want to commend you for reaching out and making sure your son will be getting quality care.

I am finishing my Bachelor's degree in Psychology down in SW Indiana. I have heard from both my classes and my field experience that community mental health centers often have long waiting lists and provide basic care. However, they are a place to start.

I did not see in your original post if your son is experiencing symptoms of a specific emotional or behavioral disorder. If you have access, it might be worth looking into services provided at a children's hospital in Chicago, since you live fairly close. These hospitals often have psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals on staff who have special training in helping children with complex needs.

In closing, nobody can make you take your child to a specific facility; you have options! No matter who is caring for him, if you feel that the diagnosis and treatment are inappropriate, you have the right to request that he be seen by other staff at the facility or given a referral to go elsewhere. I am very passionate about kids and making sure they have the best care possible!

Good luck,
