Our DS2 has developed a temperature of 102F over the last few hours and we are flying to Orlando tomorrow. He is not showing any other signs of illness, and his outward appearance and behaviour is fine.

At this stage, we cannot see any reason to cancel our trip, but wondered whether anyone else had faced a similar problem and what extra precautions we need to take for the flight?

I don't want to worry too much, but at the same time, you always want to do what is best for your child.

Any advice??

Andy

Hi Andy

See a doctor immediately, I'm sure everything will be OK but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Best wishes

:( Oh UK Saint - what a bummer. Sounds like your little one's got the 'Hampshire Head' lurgy that's doing the rounds. Over here in Lymington DD had it over her birthday, really was just terribly high temperature of nearly 41 degrees for 2 days - but wiped her out. Would suggest a quick trip to the docs to make sure no ear infections present - that could be unpleasant on the flight.

Hope all goes well, sure it's just the virus that's doing the rounds around here and nothing to worry about. Katie slept an awful lot which would be no bad thing on the flight for you.

Please let us know how you get on, Andy.

I tried to get him in to see the doctor, but they are fully booked and didn't consider this to be an emergency. I will try this afternoon in case they get any cancellations, but it is unlikely.

Temperature has now stabilised to 100.6F (38.1C) - he is usually about 99F (37.2C) - so its looking better, although I will have to see what happens as the Calpol wears off.

MrsD - Sleeping more on the Flight would be a major upside!! LOL. We flew to the States in June and he slept for all of 70 mins.

Anyway, he seems generally OK, I just don't want anything to ruin the little guys Disney experience!

Andy - how old is he?? If over 6, forget the Calpol (brill for under 6 mind you). Try Liquid Iburpofen. Recommended by our doctor for Katie last year when she had a fever and I should now have shares in the company as all my friend's have it for their children;)
It's REALLY good stuff - and they love the taste as it's orangey.

Have a wonderful trip - what date and flight do you get back and we'll look out for you flying over us:)

A healthy, happy trip to all the UKSaints (not so sure how happy and health The Saints will be in your absence, mind you;) ).

Thanks. DS is 2. Calpol tends to be our first option although we do also have liquid Nurofen for Children if required.

I spoke to NHS Direct - they didn't seem too concerned and gave me the standard advice of ensuring he drinks plenty of water etc.

We should be flying over sunny Lymington at about 6.45am on March 8 - hopefully you won't be up that early on a Saturday morning!!

sorry to hear about your childs illness.Just a word of warning if you do fly and your child gets worse over in florida make sure you read youre travel insurance documents first.Last year my wife fell ill just before we flew out and on the first day of our holiday i took her to a walk in hospital in lake beuna vista who sorted her out with a presciption .We had to pay £89 for the doctor to see her and a further £50 for the presciption. It wasa only when i read our terms of insurance that i relised i should have phoned up the insurance company first to arrange my wife to be seen by thier appointed doctor so i could not claim the excess back which in our case was only £25 but could of be higher. So please read your insurance first. I hope that you will not need this advice and your child soon gets to enjoy mickey mouse.

Hi Andy - not long to go and I hope your son is feeling much better.

Here's wishing you all a wonderful trip :)

Managed to convince the doctors to squeeze DS in as his temperature went very high again. There is no sign of any ear/throat infection but the doc was very concerned at his high temp. (104F)

Fortunately, he has prescribed some precautionary antibiotics which we can give DS if he does not improve over the next 36 hours. So, as things stand, we are off to Orlando tomorrow :) - might just have to take it easy for a few days though.

Thanks for your messages - hopefully I'll be back in a couple of weeks to report on a thoroughly enjoyable trip.

Andy
