Anyone ever tip in Disney Dollars?

Just curious if anyone has ever tipped their valet, porter, housekeeping or waiter with disney dollars, on property of course. Windering how they received it... Were they ungrateful, confused, surprised????

Honestly, I don't think they'd appreciate it very much. Most of those positions rely on their tips and I think getting Disney Dollars would be a hassle for them. They would have a hard time exchanging them for cash and would have to use them on property. It would be like giving them a DL gift certificate instead of a tip.

IMO cash is best.

I agree with the poster above. These low-wage cm's depend on cash to survive. I don't think they want to be buying Disney stuff when they need to buy necessities like gas and groceries.

It's not a good idea. Unless Disney has changed their policy, you cannot return your unused Disney dollars for real currency.

Yes you can, you just have to go to the bank in DL. It wouldn't be an easy thing for most people so no, I wouldn't tip in DD.

You can change them back, it's one of the benefits of DDs.

People have said on the WDW threads that restaurant servers actually change them out as they are being given their nightly tips. No big deal.

Now, I don't carry them around (I've only had 10-20 bucks in them on any trip) and as soon as I buy ONE thing I'm given change in regular dollars, so I don't tip in DDs, but I *would* and wouldn't have a single problem doing so, if I happened to have a bunch of DD ones on me.

I DO tip at restaurants with disney giftcards, but then I'm paying the bill with the same giftcard, so it's not doing something special or extra.

I only ask because I will be travelling with $400 or $500 in Disney Dollars and at the end of my trip if I ave any left I thought it would be a good way to get rid of em instead of changing them back to real dollars. In Vegas I'd always tip with $5 and $10 casino chips and the valets and porters always seemed grateful. I guess if they have a problem changing it back to real dollars it could be less convenient!

Soooooo.....why are you using Disney Dollars to that extent?

Oh, I told my DD(4) that she could take whatever money she finds laying around the house and put it in the piggy bank and the weekend before our trip we are going to convert all the money into disney dollars for her to spend on some souveniers. Well she has amassed quite a collection and I think my DW has been helping her by leaving "My" 1's and 5's lying around the house. She may spend it all but if she doesn't I'd have to convert em back to dollars or save em for our WDW trip next year!

Aha.

FWIW, my 4 year old likes using giftcards more. He likes holding onto the dollars, but hates spending them. That's why he doesn't get any of them. :) But he loves the cards (b/c you get them back after you use them).

DDs are just like cash; irreplaceable if you lose them, while the giftcards can be replaced if you have the receipt and the number of the card, so they are safer.

But converting to cash is a good thing, that's for sure. I think that CA law requires that they convert the cards to cash, but only under a certain amount, like 10 bucks. So it's not as helpful, if you have a bunch left.

Anyway, just something to think about if you hadn't done so already!

I love DD and am in the process of collecting them for the next trip. While a giftcard might be more logical, I just can't help myself. The only thing I hate about the DD is having to fold them up to put in my pocket to take into the park... which again would be solved by using a giftcard :lmao:

Just an FYI...some Disney Stores have a limit as to how many Disney Dollars you can purchase at one time. When I worked there it was $100 per day. I'm not sure if that policy is still in effect or not, but I thought I'd mention it. Perhaps you can do some DD's and some gift cards.

Even though tipping the bellhops with DD's probably isn't the best idea, you can use them for any purchases on property. You can settle your account at any of the on-property hotels with them, so perhaps that would be a good last-minute alternative for any leftovers. You can also hang on to them and use them in your local Disney Store or on any future trips.

We are in Dl right now and I actually tipped the housekeeping in DD today,, last nite when we checked into our suite (at midnite) we came to our room to find they had made an amazing display of rose petals on our bed, including rose petals on our door!! we had ballons, choclated dipped strawberries and charactor pics on our bed.. it was so magical! My DD was in aww! (sorry about typos I am typing this way to fast) We arrived very late and all we had were DD, so that is what I left this am along with a note. It was not asked for, all I told them was that it was our anniversary when I made reservations!!! I will get pics up later..

But yes, we tipped in DD and they took them!!!

It's inconvenient for you to change them back, so you'll make other people do it. After their long day of work and alll they want to do is go home. Now they have to change the DD over to cash to get their tips.

Of course they took them, it's better than nothing.

Just wanted to add that I had asked before when we were in Feb 08 if they took them, the bellhop said yes and that it was not an issue. Maybe they can cash at here at the hotel?? I will ask since we are still here.

Yeah, ugh I don't really see what the big deal is. They work at Disneyland so they are there daily, I can't see how that would be an inconvience to exchange. Driving across the city to exchange would be an inconvenience, stopping on your way out of work is not an inconvenience. That's my take on it, if you want to tip in Disney dollars, good on you.

It could be an inconvenience as it is not that easy to exchange them. At the very least they would have to make an extra stop to do so and it could quite possibly be more involved than that.
