My husband and I are celebrating our 15th anniversary at California Grill this August. We wanted to order a special cake, but I have been hearning negative things lately. First, I have heard that the when you call the cake hotline, the CM's are quite rude and not at all accomodating. Secondly, I have heard that the cakes are overpriced and underwhelming. Let me hear your thoughts if any....
TIA

Where have you "heard" this? The cake thread?

Calling the cake hotline is what it is. You might get someone not feeling the magic or you might get someone nice. Total luck of the draw, just like anytime you call Disney but that is the route that Disney wants customers to use to order cakes. Your best bet is to give it a try and maybe you'll be surprised.

Every custom cake we've ever ordered has been fantastic tasting. The decoration has varied but the cakes themselves were fine. If your impression did indeed come from the cake thread, well, to be honest, it seems like the same small number of people keep re-stating how unhappy they've been. Their complaints might be valid, of course, but how many people have ordered cakes and been perfectly satisfied during the same time period?

Before the cake line, I tried to order a cake from CG for our anniversary. I called CR directly and eventually spoke with a chef there. He told me their ability to make a "special" cake were limited and said they only, for example, would do chocolate or vanilla mousse/buttercream for fillings and frosting. I ended up ordering a cake elsewhere.

But you should contact them yourself and see what they offer you. Good luck.

I actually just ordered a cake at Cali Grill for our trip to celebrate my aunt and uncle's 60th birthday. I called the cake hotline. There are menu options to get you to the Cali Grill cast members. The guy I talked to was very nice. The only options were white cake with some filling (sorry, don't remember) or chocolate cake with dark chocolate filling (which we ordered). We ordered an 8 inch cake (which is what they recommended for a party of 7) and they are personalizing it with "Happy 60th Birthday" - we also asked them to put Mickey on it. Our trip is June 8-13. If that is before your trip, I could take a pic and post it and let you know if it's good or not once we return.

Our trip is not until August, so I'd love to see pictures of your cake!
Thanks so much.
