So two days ago, DBF tells me we're going to play "broomball" with his friend's school friends. I say.. ok sure not really knowing what it is. He describes it as "running around on an ice rink with sneakers on and hitting balls with brooms." I'm like... "ok..."

I mentioned it to a few of my friends and they are all like "ooo it's so much fun!" Am I stupid for never even hearing of it???

If you ever get the chance to play- do it!! It was so much fun. It was like hockey but with a rubber ball (well, we used 4 rubber balls) and these sticks w/ a plastic "broomlike" attachment at the bottom, and you wear sneakers instead of ice skates. It's pretty much a free for all, and everyone falls and gets wet from the ice. Only one girl went to the hospital- she split her chin open on the ice :earseek:

I didn't notice until it was all over- but I HURT. I woke up this morning and could barely move. My elbows and shins are so black & blue DBF said it looks like he beat me! :rotfl:

I'm never letting my kids play this... but I'd do it again if I had the chance... in a few months :rotfl2:

I loved playing broomball when I went to school at the University of Colorado. Our team would keep our taped up brooms from year to year. I can't ice skate if my life depended on it but I had a great time playing broomball!

Yes - we just back from the arena! DH and I both play on 2 teams and our 3 DD's also play.

It is a great sport - a lot of exercise because you cannot glide like you do on skates!

Sneakers are a little dangerous though - way too slippery. We have broomball shoes and you are pretty solid on the ice when you have them on.

I am also a big fan of face masks - I like my face and teeth left in place!

My husband used to play on a team in the early 80's. Each bar would have their own team, and you would travel from small town to small town and the would use a river if they were next to one, or they would make their own ice rinks if they had enough land. I think to many people got hurt and the bars didn't want the liability anymore.

Yes! I love Broomball. We were always so black and blue and sore the day after, but it was soooo much fun!

Yep! I used to play it when I was younger, with a youth group. It's a blast, isn't it? :cheer2:

Its the most popular intermural here at UNH. 10% of our student population is on a team. Its just as popular as greek life.

Our church has done family night at the local ice rink playing broomball. Of course the pastor just had to show up with his own 'real broom' for a laugh!
Even our daighter who doesn't have the best balance in the world was able to get out on the ice.

We did it at the roller-skating rink in between sessions with skates on .Goalies used big sweepers and we used reg brooms .

Gotta tell ya - you brought back such a great memory!!!! We used to play in college all the time... it was big at SUNY Geneseo. Some of my best (and most painful!) times were spent on the ice. Literally! Its a great game, and the most skill you need is being able to stand up! What a great laugh!!

Broomball is huge around here. They have all kinds of leagues for adults. It is kind of like hockey but you don't use ice skates. You will see kids playing it on the outdoor rinks all over town.
