We are considering doing this. We will still visiting all the parks, Taking the last day and driving half the way home (which is close to the beach) spending the rest of that day and the next day at the beach to wind down, sort of a two-in-one vacation? Then driving the other 6 hours home the next day. This would give us a half day and then a full day a the beach, then resting up and driving home the next day.....

Just wondering if anyone here has ever done it and how it worked out:)

(We have three small children.)

We did this last summer. Booked 2 nights at a wonderful beach resort after our Disney trip.

Going from a vacation where there's just so much to do all the time to one that involves just relaxing and playing by the ocean. Sounded perfect but it was a bust!! The kids just didn't make the transition well ( they were 14,10 and 4). We ended up packing up after the first night and just heading home and eating the cost of the additional night at the resort.

Yes:thumbsup2The one time we drove from Illinois, we went over to Vero Beach Disney for a 2-day/1 night stay after 8 days in the Parks and loved loved loved it:love:I can't think of a more perfect way to enjoy the ocean than via Disney:wizard:I think DS was 14 and DD 12......

This is our exact plan for our upcoming trip in May. We are leaving a day early and going to spend a day and a half at the beach. My youngest has never been to the ocean and my DD was a baby the last time we went. So I left it up to them if we spent some time at the beach or stayed more days at Disney and they chose the beach. I think it will be nice way to wind down from the busy days at Disney.

In 05, we left DW after 6 days and headed to Clearwater to meet up with some family. It was HORRIBLE. My DSD (4 at the time) sat on the bed in the hotel room and screamed at the top of her lungs until well after midnight. We were all exhausted and crabby and did not really enjoy the beach at all. We all wanted to still be at DW or be home already. DH has vowed that never again will he make plans for the ride home after a DW trip. (We have stopped at the beach on the way home after just a FL trip with DD 10 months and it worked out great. I think DW is just too stimulating.)

We are leaving May 13th driving down to Destin FL, and aunt has a beach house rented. She is getting married that saturday. House will sleep all 16 of us. Since we where driving down to FL, I talked the wife into driving down Sunday May16th! We ahve our best friends meeting us in Destin ,saturday. There kids and my kids are best friends. Then we are driving down to WDW. We will stay couple days in Destin, then week in WDW at POR!!

Thanks for the replies!!!!

We are planning to spend 4 park days (5 nights) WDW...drive to PCB which is half our way home and stay 3 nights. Well, It went from 2 nights (a day and a half ) to three nights (my DH loves the beach) thats fine by me. :cool1:

We did the beach on the way TO disneyworld. It was wonderful... we spent a couple days in Daytona and then it was only a few hour ride to WDW. We were refreshed from the roadtrip and ready to hit the parks! Smartest move we made. We'll probably fly on our next trip, but the next time we drive, we are definately doing the beach again!

We go to the beach every year on our way to WDW too (we drive from Vermont each year) This year we are spending 2 nights in St. Augustine before heading to Orlando.
We have found it's a wonderful way to start our vacation. I would not want to do it at the end of the trip though-
