Anyone ever hired a 4x4.......??

My DH is desperate to hire a 4x4 for our next trip to WDW next June/July.

Has anyone any experience of them in the US? Are they much the saem as in the UK or are they bigger??

We seem to be answering each others post.

We upgraded from a compact to a Jeep Cherokee with Dollar for $10 + taxes a day. This was the same as its UK version.
We also had a Mitsibushi Sport 4x4. This was not very big.

However, our friend that goes over regularly swears by the Dodge Durango's, these are nice and spacey lots of room and it has a massive V8 magnum 5.7 or 5.9 ltr enigne, I can't remember He can't recommend these highly enough.

Be wary of a large insurance excess on 4x4. We nearly hired one out of Vancouver from Hertz last February (expecting bad weather that didn't materialise) and we would have had to pay the first Can$1,000 of any accident claim.
I envisaged some minor scratch or carpark knock ending up with a repair bill of, surprise, Can$1,001 so I went for the Lincoln Towncar instead.

I got upgraded to a soft top Cherokee jeep last year because the car company didn't have any economy cars. This was quite good fun and a nice car, but when Jana arrived I swapped it for the original smaller economy car. While the softtop was fun, the downside was to go shopping or change hotel/centre wasn't convenient because it had a tiny area for luggage, and the soft top wasn't lockable.

On our last 2 visits we have had a Cherokee Jeep. If i cant get the Dodge, we will have another when we vist again in April next year. The luggage space in the boot( sorry trunk) is better than a seven seater, the drive is better than a normal saloon car, and they are easy to spot in the car parks. They are identical to the cars you see in the UK(apart form left hand drive). I recommend them very highly.

We had a Dodge Durango on our last visit and found them excellent, they were extremely big and had a lot of power!

I would highly reccomend them, but as the Ford Family said beware of the high insurance excess.

Nic usually goes for the biggest car on the parking lot

He hasn't chose a 4x4 due to the last day and locking the luggage in the boot. Do they have covers? As they say what you see you want. I would be gutted if our luggage got stolen.


Oh and when they try and upgrade you do they ask you..............

'what car do you drive at home'?!!!!!!!

We hired a Dodge Durango last summer. It was huge and spacious, but given that it is the most expensive category of car, it was a fairly basic model (no leather!).
What <i>I'd</i> really like is a Ford Expedition - they're absolutely enormous, but I don't know if any of the rental companies hire them. At the moment we're driving around in a Cadllac Deville - bronze with a cream leather interior and enough gadgets to keep Mat occupied for our entire 3 week stay! We'd booked through Dollar and were expecting to get a Chrysler 300M which is what we had last time, but we're getting used to this beast of a car (it's kinda like a Bentley to look at).

I'm thinking about hiring a Jeep myself when I go to Florida in December.

Who did you hire it though ? I usually book my vehicles ( convertibles ) in advance through people like autos abroad etc.

Do they do Jeeps ?

I don't need a big vehicle this time .. it's just me and my girlfriend.

Uhhhhh, Deb's driving a caddy!

If you want a "real" 4x4, gas guzzling, yank tank, you gotta check out a Suburban. Brother-in-law has one, jacked it up, and added a "cow rack" to it. Thing could get through 6 foot snow drifts, and serious mountainous terrain. Of course, he lives in Washington DC.

it was Autos Abroad we were thinking of using too.....because of the free travel insurance.

After reading the posts about the excess, we've been put off slightly.
Does anyone know how much (if any) the excess would be on a Intermediate for example, I have never checked this before.
And how much would the excess be on a 4x4 - just to compare.

We've recently taken to hiring 4X4's in the US as they are such fun! We had a really cool Isuzu when we went to New Hampshire in the fall and actually got to do some off road driving up mountain tracks etc! We have had a couple of chevy Blazers too which are nice too.

I like 'em as they are high up and you feel soooo much safer.

...but, in actual fact, are much more likely to cause you serious injury in case of an accident
