My brother went to ER yesterday with horrible pain in his stomach and back pain. We thought it was the stomach virus going around but ended up being Appendicitis. He had it removed in emergency surgey (microscopic surgey) late last night. He's doing good and should be out by tomorrow.
Anyone ever have this or know someone who did? Db thinks he can start back working next week. Should he? His job requires a lot of heavy lifting. Is there any thing he should keep a look out on when he gets out such as complications?

While the laproscopic version appendectomy is MUCH less invasive, he will still be restricted from heavy lifting for about 3 weeks. The good/bad news is that he'll feel MUCH better within a week... and want to go back to work!!

Yup, same thing happend to my Son (16) he had fever and stomach pain, and he had the same thing done.

He would be fine in a couple of weeks, no heavy lifting, nothing like that.

This happened to my son at the age of 4. He was playing air hockey as soon as he was able to walk (only a few hours after surgery). We thought he might rest- NOPE!

Hope your brother is doing well!

Microscopic surgery? Wow. So does that mean he won't have a scar? How does that work? He has to have a scar right?

I had my appendix out about 20 years ago. Got a nice 2 inch scar to prove it. I was in the hospital for 3 days. just remember not being able to life things for about a week.

It's a good thing he went early. I waited almost too long. mine had already ruptured. I also had an ectopic pregnancy at the same time that ruptured a fallopian tube. So I have a 7" scar and I was in the hospital for 9 days. It took me the full 6 weeks to recover.

I haven't but a boy on our Cross Country team did. He went to have it looked at at the local clinic on a Tuesday and they said it was a pulled muscle, . He ran that weekend in the state tournament and you could tell something was wrong. They took him right from the tournament to the hospital there and took his appendix out. He is doing well now but it could have been really bad.

I had appendicitis when I was 1 week shy of 9 months pregnant with DD. They operated around the baby. They say that she kicked and carried on the whole time!!!! (She still does :teeth: ) One week later I delivered a healthy baby girl, day after, had my appendicitis staples removed. That is one experience never to be repeated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As far as recovery, I did fine. I don't remember the recoop time, but it was short!!!! I had a baby to care for shortly after.

I had mine out by laproscopic surgery when I was 40, it took about a month before I felt completely back to normal and could lift without thinking about it. I'm sure he will know if he feels comfortable lifting, as far as if he feels pain or not. Lets face it none of us want to think we can be "out of commission" for a long time, its so inconvenient LOL

I had mine out in '94. It wasn't where it was supposed to be, it was 2 inches higher, so I have a half moon scar :-). I was in the hospital for 2 days and I didn't go to school for almost two weeks. I also remember being out of gym class (high school) for 6 weeks - which was TOTALLY FINE with me, LOL.

DD had hers out a little over a year ago when she was 5. They went in and it was actually Meckel's Diverticulum that wa causing her appendix to be inflamed. They removed both.

The Dr. said they automatically look for Meckel's during every appendectomy.

I hope he's feeling better soon. The nurses at the hospital did say kids usually bounce back faster than adults.

My husband his his removed just after we started dating about 8 years ago. He went in for surgery about 2 am and when I went in the next morning around 10am he was fine. He had eaten breakfast and was discharged a few hours later. I don't believe he had any restrictions. I suppose--possibly-- heavy lifting was restricted, but that didn't affect him. I do know sex was unrestricted as he was quick to point that out. :smooth:

He will have two tiny stomach scars from the laproscopic surgery. I'm not too familiar with it but he told me they filled his stomach with air and were able to go in without cutting him too much. He's more upset about the bloating than the scars...says he looks fat now.. :rotfl: My db is 36 and is in good shape and worried about he bloating from the surgey

Dh's ruptured. He was in the hospital for 2 weeks in 1999 right before Christmas. He almost didn't make it and ended being out of work for 2 months. Can you believe his boss did not call and check on him once.

My husband had emergency surgery two weeks ago. He had a pain in his side for a week and insisted it was just a pulled muscle. On Friday night he doubled over in pain but still refused to go to the ER. Finally Saturday morning I told him he WAS going to the hospital. Good thing I insisted because his appendix nearly burst. They did perforate some so he had two drainage tubes and was in the hospital for 6 days. The dr. told him he better listen to me the next time he has a severe pain! He is feeling fine now but the dr said no heavy lifting for several weeks.
I hope your brother takes it easy for a little while and doesn't over do.
