Dh and I are looking at a house but it has an inground pool and we don't want one. Anyone have any experience getting one filled?

I have never done it but I remember reading somewhere that you want to make sure you put a drain (i.e a hole) in the bottom of the pool before filling it in.

my mother had her's filled in a few years ago; I can't remember exactly how much it cost, but it was expensive. They had to break up all the concrete and order truckloads of fill; there wasn't enough fill on the original quote so they had to order more(extra cost) and then have it all landscaped, which was extra $$ also. All in all, the cost was somewhere around $8000 I think

Check your local codes and regulations because "how" you are allowed to remove or fill it in are regulated. Then probably budget around 10K for removal and landscaping -- at least here in MA:scared1:! I didn't buy one house with a pool for exactly that reason.

My sister lives next door to someone who did that and it was not done properly...now the 3 (back and 2 sides) neighboring properties constatnly have water drainage problems as a result. Whenever it rains a there is guaranteed to be a pooling of water on the neighbors lawn - if it rains enough it starts to spill over into the neighboring yards. It also then contributes to the breeding of mosquitos and mayflies - another pleasantry to thank them for.

I either would not buy the house, or just keep the pool. We have one and it is a money pit, but we enjoy it. DH says never again though.:confused3

we filled in one years ago, maybe 30 or so. We just filled it with pea gravel and put a swing set in the middle of it and used it like a playground.

I would check with your local building dept. and find out of you need to have it completely removed or can have it filled. Also you'd have to check with your insurance company because even if you fill it in, it's still technically a pool and it'll still be added to your insurance, property values, etc.

:thumbsup2 I know you are not allowed to fill a pool in around here it has to be removed.
