So DH is the true cook in the family...everything he cooks is amazing!! (I cook..just not as fancy or creative as he is!)
Every year he tries something a little different. This year is the funniest ever! Have you ever heard of "Turkey in the Hole"????? Literally he will be cooking the turkey in a hole in the ground!
This is a yearly event that goes on at his friend's house but this is the first time we have participated. Friend literally has a turkey grave (in a sense) and the turkeys are cooked right in the ground! This is what happens (I am not joking..I am typing word for word of our "letter":
What you'll need:
A fresh or thawed 15-18 lb turkey
1 large freezer bag
chicken broth ice cubes to fill the cavity of your bird
2 sticks of butter (optional)
seasoning of your choice
heavy duty aluminum foil
2-3 sturdy wire coat hangers
wood
shovel/rake
WEDNESDAY
The fire is lit and burns all day....here is the schedule of events:
10 a.m.....Lighting of the fire, ceremonial Sambuca!
5:00 p.m...spreading of the coals
5:30-6:45 turkey preparation party
7:00 TURKEY IN THE HOLE!!!
THURS 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Arrive at specified times to remove your turkey!
These turkeys cook in the ground over night!!! From what we have been told it comes out like a chicken in the crock pot.....moist and falling off the bones!
My family and I have had many many laughs over this scenario...we think this has to be one of the funniest things we have heard!!!!!
Anyone do it this way? His friend has a "grave" big enough for 8 birds. I guess the ground gets nice and warm and they sit around and have a party before the birds go under!!!!!!
