Our dog, a German Shepherd mix, is very protective of our boys so right now she is sitting at the back patio door watching them play in the snow. When they 1st went out she had to go out with them to make sure everything was ok, she is 10 years old now so she doesn't stay outside long when it is cold. She has was been like this since the boys came home from the hospital, she would check on them several times during the night. She also used to take our older son's pacifier and hide it, so that when he cried she could bring it back to us, she never chewed it she would just carry it in her mouth.

My mother raised German Shepards until I was a toddler. They do tend to get VERY protective of children, and my mom's became so over protective that she had to give them up. It got to the point where she was the only member of the family who was allowed near me

My German Shepard/Chow mix tries to break my door down if the boys are playing outside and she is inside. If there are guest in the house she is always between them and my boys. When DH is out of town she sleeps between their bedrooms. I don't worry about my boys at all with her around.

We had a dog once that was protective of our DD. One day (DD was about 5 or 6), we came home, got out of the car, and I think I was carrying groceries in. I heard DD screaming "Mom - SNAKE!!". I ran back out and DD was about 4 feet from a baby rattlesnake, and Blackie was standing right in front of DD, between her and the snake. Now, he didn't kill the snake or go after it, but he stood right in front of DD, watching the snake the whole time. I'm convinced he was protecting her from walking towards it.

Our Penny is "big mama" in our house. I remember when we brought our first DS home from the hospital. She used to sit in front of the bassinette, which was in the living room, and if he started making noise or crying she would start whining...like she was telling us the baby needed us. Over the summer my DD fell and scrapped her knees...before my DH or I could get to her our Penny was right there licking her hands and face because she was crying. The baby would get mad when I'd have to pull the bottle out of his mouth to burp him. I'd call Penny because he just loves her and she'd come to sit in front of him until he burped...soon it became her habit to just lay by me when I fed DS so she could be there when it was time for burping. She sleeps at the top of the stairs at night where the kids rooms are and I'm convinced she is making sure everything is okay.

I just love my doggy!

We ahve a lab and shep mix and hes VERY protective of our whole family. If the kids are playing on the trampoline and we arent right there ( ie they climbed up illegally) he goes nuts until we get there.

we have a shepherd mix and she is very protective of the whole family. At night she makes her "rounds" and checks on everyone. When we leave the house she sleeps in one of her beds by the front door. She looks out the window everytime a car pulls up and "alerts" us.

She was badly abused as a pup, she has the scars to prove it. And I guess this is her way of thanking us for taking care of her

My mom and grandparents used to have a chihuaha/dachsund mix. We lived with my grandparents for some time after I was born, and apparently the dog would somehow get into my crib and watch me. She wouldn't let anyone near me except my mom and grandma. If my dad tried to get me, the dog would growl and snap her jaws. My dad is 6'1, 200+ pounds, and he was scared of this little 4 pound dog.

My dog now likes to count us. I got her when I was around 15, and she would always go around looking for us. If somebody was missing, she would lie on their bed until they came home. And if the door to any room is closed, she would scratch at the door until it was opened, walk in to the room, take a look around, and then leave. She just needs to know what's going on.

Our shepherd/lab mix was very protective of us and the dachshunds. There was only one person that she did not like and that was DH's brother. They lived with us for about a year and she was very protective of our nephew. His father would have to take him to another room to discipline him. She was also so gentle with the dachshund puppies. If they played to rough, she would bat at them with her nose to break them up or put a paw on the offender's head. She was also a rescue and I just think she was so happy to find a forever home.

We have a protective Lab. She is always standing guard watching outside. We have trained her to not bark at the deer- but boy she stands up tall when they are in the yard. A boy in our neighborhood pushed dd out of his way and Lola jumped on him and knocked him down. He never has bothered her since.

Her weird thing that she does is in the morning she will walk the perimeter of the property smelling everything. Kind of taking survery of the land to identify every animal that came on in- (we don't have a fence and I am dragged around the yard every morning for the survey)

I just love these great dog stories :thumbsup2

When I was a kid, we had a German Shepherd named Tina. She was also very protective of us.

One day, when my mom was making her bed, she let my baby sister crawl around. The baby headed right for the steps, and I guess my mom never realized it. Tina started to bark and whine, and stood on the top step so that the baby couldn't go any further. My mom heard the whining and ran over and picked the baby up...and gave Tina tons of "lovies" for saving her baby. I'll always remember that.

Dogs are wonderful.

Rescued dogs are loyal to the end. They absolutely know when they've been rescued, and will show their appreciation and love until the day they die.

My family adopted several abused dogs. Those were the best, most well-behaved, most loyal, most protective, and deserving dogs I've ever known.

Our boxer, Bruiser, who has since past on was very protective of the kids when they were around. If they were outside playing he would want out there. Then he would stand near the gate, and if someone walked by he would walk back and forth barking, looking back at the kids in the yard, walking back and forth. We also had an incident with a snake and my ds that was very much like another's story. He never barked or touched or tried to get the snake but he was not letting ds get close. He had his rear end up against he body and would walk backwards, pushing ds if he tried to move.
He also slept under the cribs of 3 of his human siblings. That was his bed and he went there when they did.

I miss him a great deal...he was probably the best friend these guys have had. Now we have a boxer girl named Ginger. I think if she had to she would be protective but she is really just....well lazy. Her idea of going outside is to take a potty break and come back in. She is NOT your typical boxer. She much prefers sleeping the day away in ds bed with her head on his pillow!

Our golden, Boomer was like this when he was alive. He came to us when the boys were 3 and 4 and spent all his time playing with them. The only time he didn't is when they were in the basement. He refused to go down the basement. I didn't like it down there either. :confused3

He has been gone 3.5 years now and our Irish setter isn't quite the same mainly because the boys are all grown but if his "papa" goes outside without him, watch out! He is glued to that man.

Our late dog Ted was protective of visiting children. Our friends have a son Patrick with Down Syndrome, and Ted thought it was his sworn duty to take acre of that kid when he was around.
