Anyone else think Halloween is dumb?

This is one of those holidays that I think is stupid. Even more stupid now that I have kids.

We took the kids to the local Community college for trick or treat today. Millions of people yelling at their kids to have fun and be glad for the candy. My own kids were being ornery. Scooby Doo son doesn't like his costume. It's too hot, it's too heavy......Vampire son was whining because the fake teeth we bought were junk and the blood looked stupid. DD the dalmatian just hated her costume, of course she's only 15 months and hates a lot of things.

My dh thinks I'm terrible, but I'm praying for a rainout on trick or treat tomorrow. Then we won't get any candy and I don't have to give any out. I bought a little bag of tootsie rolls today. My mom said I'll probably need a lot of candy because we live in a neighborhood with lots of kids. I figure I'll hand out a few and then shut the door.

When ds was little we gave away all the candy he had just trick-or-treated for. My friends thought I was terrible. (He was only 2, he didn't need all that candy).

AND we went to buy pumpkins this morning. Then carved them. My BOYS who play in the mud and dirt and do other disgusting things were all wimpy about scooping out the pulp. That just annoys me every year. It's pumpkin for goodness sake, not guts! They'd probably like it if it was guts.

Ok, I'm done..........thanks for reading, if you still are with me.;)

I always loved pretending to be someone else for one day a year (but then again, I loved being in plays and wearing costumes for that.)

For myself, yes, I think it's kind of a silly holiday and don't really look forward to having to answer the door a bazillion times**. However, if you could just see my 4 yo DD's face light up whenever she looks at her Cinderella costume (made by yours truly) it would melt your heart. I just hope Friday lives up to her expectations. We don't do much trick or treating with her. There's a parade at her school, then lunch at DH's office and finally a neighborhood party. As long as a few people gush over her as Cinderella she should be thrilled.

**However, I will do it with a :teeth: on my face like so many moms did for me growing up.

I dont mind the little ones that go trick or treating. I dont even mind the older POLITE ones that come to my door. I do mind ones that come to my door without saying a word and expecting me just to hand them some candy. I hate the distruction that goes on in some areas. I am not looking forward to it this year being on a Friday night and I am able to be home past 6 pm.

Halloween is one of my favorites. ::yes::

It's not one of my favorites, either. I would not miss it if it went away entirely.

I could definitely do without it..... and my DS's only were interested until they were 6 or 7 years old. We always rent movies and get pizza or go out for a special family night instead. And we buy the candy we will eat and keep it for ourselves! :p

I love Halloween, but I can understand how you feel. I feel the same way about Christmas...I could totally live without it.

I dont care for it much either. Last yr we asked my son (8) if he wanted to trick or treat or go out somewhere special with his father. He decided to go out with his father. You can always give them other choices. Besides it pretty much has died in our neighborhood.

I really never have liked it at all. I couldn't stand coming up with a costume as a child and hate it as an adult.

I've always dressed the children up, because I know it's fun for them.

What's driving me crazy is that many of the elementary schools in my area have stopped the parties at school and my DS's middle school is having the kids dress up for some sort of contest.

Evidently, they're paying people from the hospital from across the street to come over and judge and then take the winners over to the hospital. It's a nice idea, I just wish they would use the smaller kids. Fifth graders would be fine in a hospital setting and at that age, know they won't get tormented relentlessly if their costume isn't "just right."

Plus, I have no self-control through Thanksgiving, plowing through all the leftover candy :scared1: :scared1:

I love Halloween and so does my 10 year old. We'll spend Halloween evening watching scary movies and then we plan to go to a Halloween theme park the Saturday after. I love the costumes, spooky stories, decorations... everything about it and have ever since I was a kid. :)

From someone who doesn't celebrate it, I would have to say that I really don't understand the whole concept of it & why the kids need to go door knocking to get loads of lollies to rot their teeth.

Dressing up I know is fun, but we don't celebrate Halloween in Australia & I've never really thought it was anything to write home about anyway................

Christmas is a special time & not that far away............if it were me, I'd much rather pool my money & put it towards Christmas goodies. But that's just mho.

I Love Halloween...
It is so special taking the girls trick or treating..Hopefully one of them won't be sick this year...:D

I agree with CEDmom. It is pretty silly. Purchasing all this candy and having strange kids come to your house. Also this is the night that most teenagers (even adults) are destructive. But on the other hand it sooo cute how my 3yr old DS gets so excited when he puts on his Pooh costume. He even gets exicted when his baby sister puts on her costume :teeth:

What a crabby bunch. Glad I don't live in your neighborhoods!

I could do without the sugar high, but I love Halloween. Its a chance for kids to express their creativity, imo! And trick or treating, at least in my neighborhood, is one of the few times each year that we talk and visit with our neighbors. :)

I love Halloween!!! I love the colors, the candy and the excitement of children dressing up and being princesses or super heros. Not really into the "gross" costumes tho,:p

I can't stand it. I've hated it since I was a child - just always thought it was silly. I did like the candy though. Now as an parent I hate the candy!

You know what, Sue1013? If your kids lived in my neighborhood they'd could come to my door and beg for candy and never know I didn't like Halloween. My own kids don't even know. There is nothing wrong with stating opinions - personally I wasn't crabby until I read your response!

I always liked Holloween. In fact, I met my wife while working in a haunted house.
