We leave for Disney in less than a week and I am sick! Sore throat, cough, unbearable headache, general achiness and phlegm for 3.5 days now.

Anyone have any get well quick remedies. I've slept a ton yesterday, ate some Ricola cough drops, ate chicken soup, oatmeal and tried to drink a lot of water. I don't want to go to the dr. because I don't like my doctor and she will never give an antibiotic, so basically if I go, she collects my co-pay,tells me its viral snd sends me on my way. I could go to an urgent care center, but I'd rather wait on that if there is some magic remedy I don't know of.

Thanks!

We take Echinacea with goldenroot. For most viral issues, it reduces the time significantly. Hubby was sick last week and I loaded me and the kids up. I could feel an illness try to come on, but it never did...girls didn't get sick, and my son only got mildly sick (a little warmer than usual, hoarse, and a runny nose). But he was not as sick as my husband who did Nyquil and the echinacea to get rid of it. His immunity is the worst of all of us....but at lest he will now take homeopathic medicines.
When I am plhegm-y, I also take mucinex.

I have one time (years ago) had to go for prescription cough medicine when OTC ones were not working. That knocked it out. So sometimes, even if it is viral, there may be a better med for you from the doctor.

Most colds are viral and antibiotics can't really do anything for them. There is nothing out there that cures a viral infection other then time. You can treat the symptoms with ibuprofen, cough meds, etc. though. Most colds run their course in a week or less. Just hope the rest of the family doesn't come down with it while you are there. Bring along some cold medicines just in case.

Thanks for the input. I am going to try the echinacea with goldenroot. Hey it can't hurt right? I hope I'm better because I cannot imagine 16 hours in the car like this.

VicksRub on a cottonball inserted into the ear. Good for earache and nasal stuffiness

This very same illness has been going on in my area. Starts with a sore throat and turns into a whopping "cold" that seems to hang on for close to 3 weeks. Two of my coworkers had it as did my parents. Each person did have a fever for a day or so and one of them had one as high as 102. The coworker that had the higher fever did go on two different antibiotics. Neither of them made a difference in the length or severity.

What all of them said helped them get through it was to take Sudafed throughout the day. It seems to keep down the massive amounts of mucous and helped a lot with the horrible headache that stemmed from inflamed sinuses. Good luck and hope you feel better soon. The improvement seemed to hit everyone at about day 12.

Please be careful if you are on any prescription meds!

Something for your throat is a cup of apple sauce & the rind of a lemon chopped as small as you can get it.
Put it in the fridge & every hour of so a large tablespoon.....very soothing & a great burst of vitamin C.

i had this same thing, unfortunately, i'm also asthmatic so anything that involves sinus drainage usually turns into bronchitis for me. i took mucinex, but when i ran out of that, i bought claritin D (24 hour kind), and it worked fairly well. nothing will dry my sinuses up completely, my allergies are just too numerous, but i was surprised that the claritin d worked as well as it did. i also took vitamin C tablets and a zinc pill each day, and, due to the asthma, had to give myself a breathing treatment each night. hope you get well soon, OP!

I call my Dr. and he orders a Z-Pac for me, and after 2 days, I am better. Took a little longer this time, as I was sick on Thursday and his office is closed on Thur.:headache:

I have a sinus infection right now. Like another poster, these always turn into bronchitis for me so I went to the dr. What she told me is that current recommendations say to treat symptoms and then if they don't got away in seven days, to prescribe antibiotics.

I've been doing the Neil med Sinus Rinse whenever I take my decongestant and that leaves me feelng clear for a couple of hours. I use a combined Tylenol Cold medicine. If I get a cough, I treat with Mucinex or Robitussin DM. If you do that, make sure whatever cold medicine you take does not have cough ingredients as you don't want to accidentally take too much.

Lots of water is also a must. So far I've been able to keep it under control this time. I think my biggest savior is the sinus rinse.

here is the trick that works with us. A spoonful of honey mixed with a small pinch of turmeric powder. Mix it and swallow. This is good for cough with plegm. It has been passed down from my grandmother.:cool1:

also vicks vaporrub on a paan leaf. You warm up the paan leaf in the microwave and put vicks vaporub on it and stick it straight to the chest. Paan leaf is sold in indian grocery stores.

Sounds like you are really doing everything right. I hope it passes quickly and you feel better fast!!

I'm sure there is no magic remedy that fits everyone when you are sick. Sleep never hurts. And, drink more water than normal.

Well - too late for you now since you've been sick a few days - but I had a doctor once tell me that when you start to feel "that" kind of sick (like maybe a flu bug, cold, or some other virus that is going around), to immediately start taking hot baths every hour or so.. (Bath - not shower..) I've done it - and it works.. :thumbsup2

As far as this late in the game, I think you're doing all you can do..

Hope you feel better soon and that you're able to enjoy your trip..:goodvibes

I'm not sure I want to be at Disney next week if sick people are going to be there!:teeth: We're going to be in Orlando over the Thanksgiving week. I'm hoping the weather stays nice and warm. I want to hang out by a pool some.

We've had great luck preventing the flu bug with vitamin D3. And when anyone in the family gets ill it tends to be for a short period of time - mild flu. Kind of nice. Dr. Cannell of the Vitamin D Council had a recent article about how the sunshine vitamin, D3, might be as effective at preventing the average cold as the flu shot.

Influenza, Flu Shots, and Vitamin D

Not everyone knows how to correctly take D3, as it is really a pro-hormone, not a vitamin, so thought to mention too:

Hope you get to feeling better soon!

Go to CVS or Wal-Mart and buy Hyland's Cold and Cough. It's in the kid's section, but adults can take it too. It kicks the sickies out super quick!

Thanks for all the responses. I think I'll try a combination of some of the recommendations.

So far I got the regular Sudafed and echinacea, which is helping. Luckily DH and DD are ok *knock on wood.* DD has asthma so we walk a fine line between health and illness.

DH is going to start taking echinacea to try to avoid the cold. Maybe I'll make him take the hot baths too.

I'm going to give it a couple of days and if not better, then I'll go to see an Urgent Care doctor.

3 years ago, we were going to Florida to go to US. I found out I was pregnant 2 weeks before the trip and had such horrible nausea we never went to US and only went to MK one day. This trip, we are supposed to use those US tickets. DH and my sister are huge HP fans. So we will get there, even if I have to stay in the condo sick, but hopefully that won't be an issue.

I was sick last week..went and bought this stuff by Thera Flu. You put it in hot water, stir it up, and drink it. I had a sore throat and my sinuses were bothering me, so I got the Sinus and Cold kind in the Natural Lemon flavor. I drank it two nights in a row before bed and was back to normal in no time!
