Just wondered if I was the only one. I kept getting a Red Hat page :mad: It also cost me some money as I ended up doing some bidding on eBay and ended up buying a DSLR! :rotfl: I am still in shock as I didn't expect to win it and was having fun on there. Anyway, glad to be back on. :)

Snap! Just tried the once though. What did you get on ebay?

Er .... a Nikon DSLR. Now I ask of you, who in their right mind .... :lmao: I have just downloaded the user manual to sit and get a head start while waiting for it to arrive. :upsidedow I leave in less than a month for Disney and now have to familiarise myself with a different camera. I will be taking my other one however so not too bad. Of course cameras require all kinds of 'essential' accessories too, not least of which, another lens or two ... :rolleyes1 I had made my decision last night and went to bed feeling so relieved that I was going to wait until I got back. Then the DIS was down .....

Hi,

I got a Nikon D5000 last Christmas and it will be the first time it has gone to WDW ( it has been on several trips this year)

I took it to my local park at Christmas and played around with it to get familiarised with it, how it worked and the settings ( as you do not want to try to work it out when on holiday)

Some hints that may help;

(1) take plenty of memory cards with you ( you can delete pictures at leisure)
(2) take a spare battery or two and a charger (remember the different us plug types)
(3) maybe a tripod for night time shots although the low daylight picture quality of the D5000 is pretty good.

Thanks TBS. I do have a nice tripod and may do that, although I think with the kit lens it may not even justify an attempt by an amateur like me. I will have to wait for the camera to arrive so I can make sure that it sits securely on there with the lens on. I think the D40 is fairly lightweight so it shouldn't be a problem.

I have quite a few memory cards, but taking my laptop so that I can transfer my pics and video camera footage in the evenings to keep the cards relatively free. I have a habit of taking quite a lot of pics and then deleting the ones that I don't want after viewing them on a bigger screen (a LOT get deleted).

I think the spare battery is a good idea. I have just been searching online. I wonder if it is safer to just spend more and get the genuine Nikon battery rather than the cheaper replacements?

Hi,

I have the EN-EL9 battery for the D5000 ( in fact I have 4 - the Nikon battery,and Energiser ( sold at Jessops) battery and two unnamed batteries which I got when I bought a battery grip which can also take 6 AA batteries to power the camera.

The D5000 has live view but if you do not use it I found the Nikon/Energiser batteries to take 1,000 photos before they are drained. The unamed batteries last somewhat less ( maybe around 800 ( but they were less than half the price of the Nikon Battery with the Energiser battery priced in between.

With Live view on, ( or video & flash ) the batteries will drain faster ( the Nikon book says c 500 photos with Live view). I have also ordered a battery charger with the US plus so I do not have to worry about an adaptor.

So far I have no complaints about the batteries ( still going ok) -the only thing with the camera is that the battery charger stays at full charge for a long while then goes to 50% capacity to " Low" relatively quickly there are not that many more photos that can be taken before the battery is exhausted ( c.100 perhaps). I would certainly take a spare battery with you- Having a dead camera half way round WDW would not be a good idea with so many photo ops around!
:sad1:
