I just checked out flights just to compare. It's $300 RT, so for 3 of us that's $900. Even at $5 a gal, it's cheaper to drive. $5/gal will cost us around $600 RT.
I am just so glad we changed our minds about driving a couple of months ago and bought our airfare at a decent rate. With gas prices soaring, we would not save enough to make a 20 hour drive worth it. We are flying for something like $170 pp rt.
If the price of fuel increases enough the airlines could impose additional fuel costs in the form of surcharges. They have done this in the recent (over $4/gallon gas days) past.
I am budgeting around $300 for gas. That is at $4 per gallon and allows for driving around Orlando. We are about 550 miles away from the Mouse and get 17 mpg in our SUV.
Thankfully our lodging and tickets are already paid for.
Someone mentioned good deals in early summer to drive rental cars out of Florida. I checked and managed a deal. We are flying for $100 per person on Southwest--luggage flies free. We are renting a car from Hertz to drive back for $9.99 per day (unlimited miles). We actually could have gotten $5 per day for a compact, but I wanted a little larger than a compact for luggage, etc. The special ends June 12.
Sure is, but I know quite a few over there through autoracing forums and if I could buy a really nice shape late model Toyota MR2 with under 100,000 miles for 1000 GBP as opposed to about $10,000 here, I wouldn't complain much about $10/gallon gas. The extra ~$8,000 (guestimating the exchange, I know it's not that much today) would buy a lot of $10/gallon gas.
I never understood why people freak about gas prices when discussing vacations either. People spend thousands on vacation, but an extra $50-100 is going to break it? I spent $225 last year to drive from above Pittsburgh to Disney (1090 miles one way) and the link tells me it would cost me about $320 today. That's not even $100 difference, certainly not something that would have caused me to freak and cancel a $2500 vacation all for $95.
Yeah- it still is cheaper than 5 of us flying. Actually I did budget for 3.50, and even if it hits 4.00 its only about $60-$75 more. But they are scaring me saying it may go higher. Plus, I am worried about the everyday price too. The increase in gas seemed to kick off the last recession. I was in Walmart supercenter and a small box of cherry tomatoes was $4.88!!!! The prices are climbing FAST!! I guess we will enjoy our trip this year- who knows if we'll be able to afford another...
Kinda going off topic here but the cost of ground beef is going to go record high as well. We are looking into purchasing part of a cow to save some money. Corn is going to skyrocket as well, it's gonna get worse before it gets better.
Our Wegman's is having 40 products that are guaranteed to stay the same price for all of 2011. Ground beef (80/20) and boneless chicken breasts will be 1.99/lb, bananas .49/lb and other staples. I am happy about that!

Love Wegmans! Honestly, if I let myself, I start getting worried about the price of gas, food, etc. But I'm a natural worrier. That said, if we do move, we're hoping to go somewhere that's within walking distance to a food store, restaurant, and most importantly, good schools. I don't think this gas up/down stuff is going to stop anytime soon... I don't ever forsee the .99 cents a gallon that we got back when we got married--and that was only 12 years ago.

That's awesome. At east living here in the heart of growing country, fruits and vegetables stay relatively cheap. Although tomatoes and bananas are at 75 cents a pound usually, which is slightly high.
Most the other things I get are from a local couple that grows their own stuff. I get bundles of veggies for a 1$ each, which is just enough or more than enough for one week's worth of food. So about 3-5$ each week on fresh food.
