I'm such a wimp when it come's to the dentist! I get queezy, and light headed just thinking about going to the dentist let alone actually going! I have a toothach now and I want to get it taken care of before Thanksgiving - but I'm such a scaredy cat! Is anyone else like this? And if you are - how do you actually get yourself to the dentist?? HELP!!!

I'm scared of the dentist as well. I swear the one I had as a kid was a sadist, he once did a filling with no novacaine because "it was jsut a little drilling."

It scarred me for life. Now I need gas to get my teeth cleaned, and gas/valium for anything else.

I'd find one who specializes in nervous patients and advertises gentle care and see if they can fit you in.

OMG ANNE!!! That happened to me when I was little too!!!!!!!!!! He hit a nerve and I actually almost fainted - I've never been the same again thats for sure!

If it helps, I'll hold your hand. I'm also a big baby. :grouphug:

On my last visit, I had to have the cap on my front tooth replaced. That led to "There's a hairline break in the next tooth, why not veneer that one and get all of your teeth bleached to match?"

Now, my DD was getting married in a few months so I agreed. Let me tell you, there's nothing I hate and dread more than novacaines, especially when my nose gets numbed in the process. I was a drooling mess for awhile.

I do get a lot of compliments now, but if it wasn't for the wedding, I never would have gone along with getting so much work done.

Good luck. You already know that ignoring it could lead to even more of a problem. The sooner you get the courage to do it, the sooner it will be behind you.

Some dentists used to be quite barbaric, didn't they? When I was a kid, I had one who would smack kids when they moved or cried out in pain. He was gawdawful. My mother, who respects doctors as THE authority on everything, actually quit taking us to him, so that really tells me how bad he was.

When my DS was little, he needed some dental work done (pulpectomy and something else) and the dentist we took him to wanted to tie him to a bundling board to do the work because my son was so scared. I told him it was out of the question and we ended up taking him to a pediatric dentist who didn't even have to gas him to do the work. Can you imagine how traumatic that would be for a kid???

I know - you are right. I'll make that appointment today. I'm envious of those veneers though. When my 5th child was a baby - she head-butted me and killed the nerve in my front tooth. Now its a tad darker than the other tooth. I want them all to match. I heard that veneers don't last that long though - is that true? Does it take a long time to get them (and does it hurt?LOL!)

This is so wierd. I'm on my way to the dentist right now and I have that queasy feeling in my stomach. I've had a toothache for a few days and was hoping it would go away but now it's gotten so bad that I'm forcing myself to go. I've had seven children without drugs, yet I get in a cold sweat at just the thought of the dentist. I really do think the dentist that were around when I was a kid are the root of the feelings of fear that everyone's expressed. Well wish me luck - off I go.

Ok...just to give you an idea of how bad I am. I just read your post and came to the word "pulpectomy" and got lightheaded! :earseek: :faint:

Dental medicine has certainly come a long way, not only in the types of treatments they offer, but in "bedside manner". I took my son to a pediatric dentist as well--he was GREAT and my son never complained about going there.

GOOD LUCK! I'll be with you in thought! I'm like you - 6 kids with no drugs and a wimp when it comes to the dentist! I actually have told my dentist - "I'd rather be delivering a 10 pound baby than be sitting in your chair right now!"

I've had my front tooth capped since I was 12. It always seems to last at least 10 years. The adjacent tooth is my first veneer so I'll see how it goes.

You have to get your tooth numbed twice. First is when they prep the tooth and put the temporary cap on. (The veneer is similar to a cap, but not as thick in the back.) The next round of novacaines is when the final product is put on.

I hated the procedure, but I did feel very confident when I smiled for the wedding pix.

I am a big baby when it comes to the denist too. I had reconstructive dental work 2 years ago over the course of 9 months.

Here are my tips

1. Bring a friend

2. Find a really good denist that babies his patient and believes in valium, laughing gas, etc.

3. pamper yourself afterwards.

I am so scared...I hadn't been to the dentist in years. I went in September and got a huge list of things that needed to be done. I finally made an appointment for the week after next. I will have valuim and gas. I wouldn't even let them clean my teeth until after all the work so they won't hit a cavity or something. I also had a bad pediatric dentist when I was younger. He would cover your mouth and nose if you cried to make you stop crying. I really try to be brave, but I too would much rather be in the L and D room giving birth:)

I defintely do not look forward to it. Just the thought of it right now gives me the chills.

I'm terrified of going to any doctor!

But you know, you don't want your Thanksgiving to be ruined because of a toothache. Especially since you won't be able to go in until next Monday.

I had to get a crown put in right before Thanksgiving. They "rushed" it and everything so I wouldn't have to eat turkey with a temp crown in my mouth!

OMG that reminds me I have a dentist appointment today. :scared:

I had to have a tooth extracted when I was younger and the mad dentist did it without anything......yipes.

When DS at 6 had to have 3 teeth removed I was sooooo scared for him but with modern technology or a better dentist he didn't feel a thing. :flower:

IT must have been the "IN THING" to do when we were kids.

I HATE dentists too! :scared:

So sorry you have to deal w/ a toothache. I agree w/ valium and laughing gas. I also use headphones on a local station VERY loud :music: It really helps me to have the favorite oldies station on. NOT talk radio though.

I am a big dental coward, but also fortunate to have found a dentist who did not graduate from the Marquis de Sade School of Dentistry. My first encounter with him was a root canal; he managed to get me through the procedure with minimal pain (and the tooth was so sore I couldn't even touch it with my tongue).

I found the key is telling the dentist up front what your concerns are and ask if he is willing to work with you. My dentist understands that -- for me -- novacain is my BEST friend when I'm in his chair... the MORE the BETTER. I much prefer the numbness, drooling and slurred speech for a few hours to the pain.
