I have an ADR for the luau during my September trip with 3 girl friends. One of them wanted to do the luau, so even after reading several bad and so-so reviews, I went with it. Anyone had experience with it lately? I had also wanted to try Kona, and wondered whether the food would be too similar to the luau food.

We went last Sept. and really didn't like it that much and the staff was rude to us. We were staying at the AKL and the Poly held the show late (like and hour) so all the buses quit going when we got out and the girl told us that they (Poly security) would take us back if this happend but NO, the staff saw us coming to the desk and they kept looking at their computer screens and even when we came to the front desk they wouldn't talk to us until the guy ahead of us got so mad I really thought he was going over the counter at them. They woudn't even call are resort. Lets just say it was a long night at Poly.

We were there last month and we really enjoyed it. The show was good, the second part was better than the first part. The food was really good: the first course-- salad with fresh orange slices on top and a sweet dressing that was delicious, fresh cut up pineapple, and bread. The second course--chicken, ribs, vegetables and rice. Dessert--chocolate lava cake. My kids, husband and I had a good time at this dinner show.

I was at the Luau in October, so it has been a while, but we really enjoyed it! We are going to Kona this August and from what I can see the menu looks very different. I don't think I would worry about the food being similar. We really enjoyed the food at the Luau - we actually had to tell my ds7 that he had to stop eating. I did not care for the dessert at the time, hopefully you will get the chocolate lava cake that FloraFauna mentioned.
I know that I am in the minority, but I preferred the Luau over the Hoop Dee Doo by far. Have Fun :)
