Anyone currently driving back? Lighter post to make the best of it

We are tracking the situation closely, but there are still a much lower number of cases where I am than back at home and no reported public transmission.

We WILL be allowed across the border even if sick, but will be transferred by Customs to Public Health who can conceivably force us into quarantine. We are both feeling fine, and with only 4 cases in our immediate county as of today (up one from Friday) it is highly unlikely that we have come in contact. We continue to practice social distancing and good hand hygiene. Meals will get a little more difficult from here as restaurants are going to take out only as of tomorrow (but we haven't really been going to restaurants anyway); we are in a timeshare and have a fair stock of groceries to last us through Saturday.

Enjoying every moment we can as we know we will be stuck inside our home for 14 days when we return, regardless of when that is. Had a pleasant bike ride this morning to the local bird sanctuary, saw only two other small family groups there. Pool at resort was much busier today, but still easy to keep a respectful and proper distance from other guests.

I really wouldn't trust that the number of reported cases actually represents the number of actual cases with the lack of testing there. We have a house in Beaufort County and so have been following closely. As of today, there have only been 456 covid-19 tests done in South Carolina that has a population of about 5 million people. Contrast that to Ontario where they have done over 10,000 tests for a population of 14 million people.

So don't let your guard down just because of the reported numbers down there. The weather is beautiful, though, lol.

I read that Canada has done more tests than the US, and of course we have a much smaller population. I have not read how many of those tests were positive though, I know there are stats on how many cases are in the country, but I would wonder how many people have it an don't know, given it can be mild symptoms. In any case, I guess we'll know more once it's over. Hopefully all the self isolation and limiting of everything will be effective.

Yes, the US was late to testing because of their refusal of the WHO tests, but they are catching up. Beaufort Co. has a drive through testing site setup now (on doctor's approval). Just an opinion that the prevalence is probably lower here. The weather is already nice, and people don't tend to congregate in big groups indoors the way they do up north.

Found out last night that my ex back home may have developed symptoms, and DS is also feeling poor. DS thinks it is just a cold based on the timing, but his mom is a bit of a worrier. My DD is now isolating at my house away from her mom and brother. I am hoping we are not returning to a s***show. If it does turn out they are positive (doctor has not ordered testing), then I don't know where we will go when we return; do we hole up with DD or try to find a hotel so we are away from her until she is clear? Note that I know this sounds a bit cold, but these are my adult aged kids, and I am mostly interested in limiting everyone's exposure.

I don't know if staying at a hotel would be considered self-quarantine (which they will tell you to do when you cross back into Canada from the USA). It would be pretty bad to have to stay in that one room for 14 days. Also, you may be more at risk in a hotel since who knows the health history of the person who occupied it before you.

Most sites are saying that the person under quarantine in a household should be staying in an isolated area of the house using their own bathroom facilities and should not come in closer than 6 ft of anyone else.

Yes, I suppose we could probably do that, between four bedrooms and two bathrooms we might be able to be like ships passing. God knows my DS has been able to manage that for years now. Again none of us have symptoms, but we (myself, DW and DD) would be in the group that should be self-isolating.

I would jump in your car now. They just announced boarders to close to non essential travel. Trucks and supplies yes, but not sure about cars....get educated,,, I hope you dont get stuck there.

@bankr63 Canadians are always able to return to Canada (even if the borders are closed). But I do agree with everything going on you should leave now and get home as quickly as possible. Your family here could use the support by the sound of it. (Emotionall support if not physical).

It's no longer about the "Me" it's all about the "WE".

OR.... take a longer term rental and stay hunkered down, at least until your daughter is clear to leave so you'll be able to isolate yourselves at home. Good luck, whatever you decide.

The CDC has some guidance which may help:

"What To Do if You Are Sick"

"If someone in your home is sick"

where is the bird sanctuary?

Someone I know just flew back from Orlando to Detroit a few days early (Thursday instead of Sunday). A family member was supposed to cross the border to pick her up from the airport but ended up saying no because he would have to self-isolate from his job for 2 weeks. She was able to rent a car in Detroit and return it here in Canada for something like a $100ish. Good option for all those Florida folks returning!

This was the Audubon Newhall Preserve on Palmetto Bay Rd. First time discovery for us, we have driven and ridden by it countless times as it is across the road from the bike path and not well marked. A real oasis in the middle of the island. Would also highly recommend the Pinkney Island National Wildlife Refuge, on the mid-point of the causeway to the island. We did this last trip, and it is a huge preserve; bring bikes to enjoy the entire expanse. We didn't have a bike rack this time, and it is a pretty long ride from mid-island.

BTW -pulling out early tomorrow. Will surely report back on our experience after we get home Sunday afternoon.
