Anyone buy the Minnie Topiary on Disney Shopping?

When we were there for the Flower and Garden festival they had a display showing how they do the different types of topiaries. Some were trees that they pruned to the shape they wanted, others were moss filled. If you google "disney topiaries" I found some articles on how to fill them :thumbsup2

I bought the Minnie, Pluto and Donald topiaries with no knowledge whatsoever of how to grow them. I thought it would be a fun project to attempt. The Donald and Pluto ones came today and after seeing them it shot down my plan of planting a topiary friendly shrub (common myrtle) because of the slender legs. All of the plants I've seen are already too big.....guess I'll have to be on the look out for a smaller plant to start with. I live in AZ so I don't think using the moss and ivy approach would work in our climate which is why I'm going with the shrub approach. Let me know what you decide to do. I'm really curious how other peoples turn out!

I bought Minnie,Pluto,Donald and Goofy. They are a lot of fun but a lot of work too. You start at the bottom with long fiber spaghum moss which you soak in a bucket of water for at least 10 minuets, line their feet bottoms first like you would line the bottom of a wire basket.Build up the sides and fill the cavity with potting soil, continue to work up the sides with moss then fill with dirt, packing tightly. I mix up the potting soil with additional pearlite and also add soil most crystals to help retain water. In some parts you might want to wrap fishing line around it, to keep the moss and dirt in. After it is all filled you put small spreading plants in holes you poke in the moss and water well. The plants I have found to work well are Sedum (the ground cover kind) it comes in many different colors. There are other ground covers that will work well too, such as moss and thyme. Just to let you know I used 6 cubic feet of spaghum moss for my 4 topiarys I found if you let them sit for a few day after planting then go in and pin the plants with topiary pins to direct the direction you want them to grow.I found the pins at Joanns and Michaels craft stores in the silk flowers. It is also a good idea to pinch them back so they spread. The first one I did on June 30th and it is really filling in and taking shape with some triming. If you google topiarys on the net you will find some sites with instructions on how to do them but a lot is going to be trail and error, I know my were. Have fun and be patient. One more thing there is sheet moss which comes in green that I used for Minnie's arms and legs,I wrapped it around and then used fish line to secure it. I'm new at this but if I can help just let me know.
