I got an offer in the mail from american home shield which covers all the major appliances, ac/heating unit, plumbing, etc. for $39 a month. If any of these things break they'll send a technician to fix it for a $55 deductible and if they can't fix it, it'll be a $55 deductible to replace it. It sounds pretty good. I know my parents had their fridge replaced this way, but I was wondering if anyone else had any experiences with this company or any other company that does this.

We have had HSA Home Warrenty since we bought this house in 1999. We have since had work done on or replaced, the fridge, stove, dishwasher, both heating/ac units AND the hot water tank! The microwave is now working when it wants too. OH! AND we had the garage door worked on. It has WELLLLL been worth it for us to have the warrenty. I think it depends on where you are in the life expectancy of your appliances. For example, this house was built in 1992, so it seems that everything was coming apart at once! If you have a new home, and the appliances are all new, then I would think you wouldn't nee the warrenty until about 10 years. Also, if the house is older and you don't know when they were last replaced, I would concider the warrenty. I know some folks will say it's not worth it, but for us, it has been!!

sellers of our first home included a year's warranty with the purchase (home was around 40 years old). we kept up the policy for the additional 6 years we owned the place. ended up using them only once for an issue with the a/c-heater. ended up that the model unit was so old replacement parts were unavailable. ahs ended up paying for a custom part to be made (took about 3 trips by a sheet metal guy and the a/c guy to figure out how to best construct the part). when all was said and done we found out the bill for us to have done it on our own would have been close to 3K for everything it entailed. so we were very happy with the investment.

when we purchased our second home the builder did a 2 year warranty but we did an ahs contract that picked up when the builder's ended. it worked out realy well for us, because when we got into a dispute with the builder on one issue we used ahs to cover the repair so we could get it fixed.

also-when they say someone will be out in 24 hours they mean it. generaly you get a call back with a service provider with an appointment in less than an hour. if you have an emergency (like a burst pipe) you've have someone on the spot within a few hours.

Gee, we had a very different experience with AHS. We bought an older home with many original appliances. They put band aid after band aid on our 18 year old hot water heater. I did not always feel comfortable with the people they sent and had no choice in the matter. They also did not cover out garage door opener when the spring broke. They only cover the motor. Needless to say we did not renew after the first year.:sad2:
