We are looking to vacation at Virginia Beach in July. Having never been there before, I'm having trouble choosing a hotel to stay at. For anyone who has stayed there, is there a hotel you would recommend? We would like to stay on the boardwalk but don't want to spend a fortune either. Thanks for any suggestions!

I wanted to bump this for you so you might get some replies. Although I haven't stayed on the beach, I was looking for a room for a night or two in July and most rooms are over $150 and up. Good luck - perhaps try hotels.com

sorry, we camp there.....if you can deffinetly go see cape henry lighthouse...awesome...and seek out sandbridge, its a secluded part of the beach....very pretty area.

We went 10 years ago during the 1st week of July....all I can advise on is ask your hotel if there are any reunions going on.....we tried 4 different hotels and all were packed. We finally opted on a Holiday inn, not on the beach, and had to eat out every meal...the reunion had the hotel restaurant privately booked during all meal times. I can say my favorite part of the trip was visiting Norfolk Naval Base. The beach/boardwalk was nice and there are a ton of tourist shops etc. all along the main strip.

Before DH and I got married (about 18 years ago) we stayed at a place right on the water, it was very nice, but for the life of me I can't remember the name. Not sure what it would be like today, but I will check with DH to see if he remembers. Once we were married we lived there for a year and a half, it was a wonderful place, so I am sure where ever you stay you will have a great vacation.

Okay, DH is thinking it was called Colonial Inn on Atlantic Avenue. Keep in mind this was almost 18 years ago, so we have no idea the quality of service etc. now.

DH was stationed out there, and we had our daughter out there last summer. My parents came to vacation there for the 4th of July also when we were living there. I love Virginia Beach, and I miss it terribly.

Anyways, I can't tell you much about hotels since I never stayed at one when we were living there. But my parents stayed at an Extended Stay for almost a week, and for them it was cheaper (something near $300 for the week). It's about a 10-15 minute drive to the beach, close to Wal-Mart and grocery store, Walgreens for developing pics. If you want to stay on the strip, then there are some nicely priced hotels/motels there I just don't remember the names. But be careful, because I remember seeing some crappy looking motels on the strip as well. All the nice hotels are on Atlantic Avenue. Good luck, and have a great trip!

tiggerlover, hello fellow Navy wife! I'm newer to this than you are, but I can tell that we're both proud to have one of the toughest jobs in the Navy;) I loved VA Beach, wish we could go back... maybe in another year or two, after DH's 6 month tour. Not looking forward to those 6 months at all.:(

Trinity is right - you have to watch some of the hotels on the strip....and some of them off the strip too!!!! I am a navy niece and cousin and have been out there probably about 25 of my 34 years of life for visits. VA Beach is a great place to visit and I've always wanted to live out there.

If you are also looking for places to visit - Williamsburg is about an hour from the beach (if you stay right on the beach). I don't think you can go on base any longer - since September 11 - unless you are with someone that belongs on the base and has an ID which is too bad because it use to be so cool to go and just drive around the base and check things out. It always seemed like a little town within a town. Forbes Salt Water Taffy has it's factory off of Lynnhaven near the Lynnhaven mall and I have heard they do tours - they have THE BEST salt water taffy!!!! There's lots of trinkity stores on the strip - always cool to walk up and down and in an out of the stores - some of them are icky but some are neat just to see the junk they have and some have really cool things too. As mentioned before Sandbridge is a neat place to visit. Waterfront is a shopping area in downtown Norfolk that is pretty cool - has some very unique shops, probably about 20 minutes from the shore. If you want a great seafood buffet - find out how to get to Captain George's....I am not a seafood person but it is AWESOME!!!!! Here is their website.... http://www.captaingeorges.com/locations/index.htm

There is also the Mariner's Museum around and alot of things to do. Hope you can find someplace to stay.

We lived there for about 20 years while DH was in the Navy... we relocated about 3 1/2 to 4 years ago after he retired and got a sillyvilian position.

Anyway, try this link for a few hotel suggestions: http://hamptonroads.atevo.com/guides/destinations/bygeo/1,3641,801,00.html

There are a lot of hotel chains there too, Raddison, Holiday Inn, Quality Inn. You just might want to do a Google search for Va Beach. I lived there, but only now am I frequenting the hotels, because we go back every so often for the weekend.

Should I ask if you'll be driving or flying?
