I am thinking of booking the halloween cruise out of New York going to Saint John, New Brunswick. It's a 4 night cruise on the Disney Dream. I am thinking about it because we have not been on the Dream before. My parents want to go on their first cruise with us. This is the only cruise that works for my kids school schedule.

My main concern is that it will be too cold for my kids to enjoy the water slide. We are from the PNW and they swim outside year round, even when it snows (the pool is heated, and they have deck coats) so maybe if it's open they will still enjoy it. So is the pool area open in October in Canada?

What do you think would this be a fun first cruise for my parents?

How is Saint John? Is it a good port? has anyone been there and would recommend it?
Thanks for you feedback.

We have sailed to that port twice and the weather was lovely. Once in September and it was warm enough for shorts and then another time in the middle of October and it was cool but not cold. We rented a car and went hiking both times (both in St. John and Halifax). The pools are open and the water is heated, so you should be fine. There is plenty to see and do for people of all ages. 4-nights is too short for us (we have sailed the 5-night to Canada, which is also too short!) but if it's their first cruise, it might be a good length.

I live in New England, my kid will go into the water when the water is barely in the 50s and will protest when I pull her out as her lips start to turn blue, the pools are heated so I don't see it being a problem as being too cold for the pools.

On my 2016 cruise, I found the downtown area near the pier to be friendly and walkable. If you're a beer drinker, there is a very good brew pub just a few blocks away.

We were just there in October on a DCL out of NYC. The port area has a few places to eat and there are drivers available to take you anywhere you want to go. There was a really cool area near the port that had many cargo ship containers set up like a little village with many shops and food places. That was new and not there last time we went.

Kids were in the pool onboard all the time as long as it was not raining.

If you have never sailed out of NYC do it as it is breathtaking sailing down the Hudson River!
