we will be taking a plane first time and arriving in Orlando at 12:30 a.m., so I'm figuring by the time we get to resort would be around 2:00 give or take some time for luggage and ME. I'm worried I will get there and have trouble going to sleep from excitement. I guess I shouldn't have any high expectations for this first day but would like to get a few hours of sleep. The plus side is we won't have to deal with waiting around to check in so that is good. Can anyone tell me what their ritual is and any tips.

Honestly, I generally don't sleep the whole day before I leave for ANY trip. So I'm always EXHAUSTED getting on a plane. If you don't sleep on the plane, by the time you get to your hotel, to your room, and then settle in, you should be too tired to stay up for too long. Put on some music or the TV set and start counting the seconds in the minutes. That's what I do. I don't usually get too far before I wake up and it's the next day. :) Just make sure to set your alarm so you don't miss anything the next morning! Good luck and enjoy your trip!

Your right, I'm probably going to be so exhausted by the time we hit the room so that will probably take over. I'm usually an early sleeper so this will be a bit much for me lol. Worst comes to worst I will just take something to relax me so I'm guaranteed to sleep a,few hours.

Our first trip, we got up around 4:30 AM to catch our plane. Got to our resort midday, had lunch in the food court, unpacked and headed straight to the parks. It was a bad, bad idea. My wife especially was so over being in the parks, she was tired and cranky. She still has memories of anger whenever she hears the soundtrack of Main Street Electrical, because she wanted to be out of there the whole time it was running through (although she actually does enjoy the parade itself)

Our second trip was a lot more relaxed. DW had just finished chemo, so we had to take it easy. First thing we did when we arrived in our room was nap. We woke up in much better shape after that.

Now we typically try to plan our first day as a non park day, even if it means a late evening arrival flight and basically just getting to the resort for sleep time. Of course, that's not always possible in the grand scheme of things, so really the main thing is to listen to your body. If you want to head straight to the parks first thing in the morning to get those first drops of magic, maybe look into heading back to the resort for a midday break. Or make that day an early night. If you know that you cannot function on 4-6 hours of sleep, make it a late morning park entry and try to close the park.

We started our Disney going with the 'No sleeping in Disney' mindset, but at the end of the day, you're not gonna enjoy yourself if you burn the candle from both ends. Missing out on a few experiences that would be enjoyable but are no must do to keep yourself as well rested as you can will result in a better vacation than doing it all and being exhausted.

Thanks for the response and hope all goes well with your wife.!
Yeah I guess I just won't have high expectations for the first day I will just tell myself either we get up later in the morning and go to park for 2-3 hours until early afternoon or just start as a pool day and go later on. I'm ok with getting up early sometimes but it's going to be hard staying up to catch a plane when I would normally be in bed going to sleep.

We take early morning flights and gostraight to epcot for lunch and do a few rides and attractions, and than head to resort for dinner and than to bed. We can't sleep in we're all to excited. We find Epcot to be the most relaxing park.

We're not on an early morning flight, it's a late night flight arriving just after midnight so going to parks is not an option

In Aug. we will arrive at the airport after midnight and will be dealing with a 3 hour time change so we know we probably won't sleep much, if at all. So we are planning on doing RD that morning and then go back to the hotel to sleep so we aren't crabby the rest of the trip!

I have a hard time turning my brain off at night if I've been traveling and arrive so late. I usually make sure that day to avoid caffeine (even though I'm usually craving it at that point) and avoid too many liquids (no use in getting to sleep just to wake up to use the restroom). I use a nature sounds app (Relax Melodies) and rub some lavender oil on my temples and that helps me at least calm down and rest even if I don't get actual true sound sleep. Earplugs are also helpful to block out noise. The first night at a hotel is always tough for me to get used to noises.

I know my mind will be racing so I think I will have to take something which will help me to get a few hours of sleep. I also use Mack Earplugs and have my fan so it blocks out all noises. Who knows maybe my tiredness will just take over by the time we arrive. I usually go to bed and fall asleep before 10 so staying up for this flight is going to be a real challenge for me.

melatonin as a PP mentioned works really well for me when i'm in a situation of need to sleep, body wants to sleep but I just can't sleep.

I'm flying on a red eye for my trip next April. I anticipate I will not be sleeping on that plane at all due to all the excitement of being on my vacation. The last time I flew a red eye to MCO, I had the same issue. I was planning on trying melatonin or tylenol PM to see if I can't fake myself to sleep for a little bit.

On our last trip, my husband and I had a 6 AM flight out of O'Hare so we had to be up at 3 AM to catch it. I think I got maybe 3 hours of sleep that night. I usually try to take melatonin but I was too excited to sleep. We were onsite and in our room by noon so we just took a few hours to relax, shower, and unpack. We planned on napping but that didn't happen. We took it easy that evening and just strolled around the World Showcase and caught Illuminations.

I'll be getting off work at midnight, then on the plane at 0830, so I should simply pass out at some point
