I am just about to send a query for a children's book I wrote. Would you have a sample of a successful query? I've done my research and everything, but I am curious to know what worked for you - you meaning what kind of query got you on your way to be a published author.

I know I could go the vanity route and print them out, but I prefer to go through an established publisher.

Thanks!

BTW I have been inspired by the Family Circle series on Dare to Dream. I have shelved this book for years and I think it's time. :)

I'm not published (yet), but I'm actively seeking representation for my YA novel. Even though I'm not signed with anyone yet, I consider my query successful, based on the number of agents who have requested partials or full manuscripts.

My three bits of advice:

1 - You may intend to do this already, but you should be querying agents, who will then solicit the publishing houses. I'm not interested in a vanity press either, but the established houses very rarely give serious looks to unagented material. If they didn't ask for it, or if you're not connected, it's going in the slush pile. (This may be your intention (to get an agent, not end up in the slush pile lol), but it wasn't clear from your post...)

2 - Visit the blogs of some respected agents...I'd start with Kristin Nelson (http://pubrants.blogspot.com/) and then link off of there to sites like Miss Snark. They're great resources, straight from the agent's mouth, and they're really helpful on a lot of topics - not just queries. The best part is, they'll give actual, real-life examples. Sure, it's helpful to get suggestions of what TO do, but it's even more helpful to have them share the things NOT to do. You can do a search of their blogs for some tips specifically on queries, but I'd also recommend just browsing for info.

3 - Bookmark Writers.net and visit it often. Lots of published writers (many of them with very nice deals) post on the boards there, as do many respected agents (Kristin Nelson being one of them). They're really helpful on basic questions, and also excellent editors. If you post what you have, they'll tell you if you're on the right track.

Hope that helps...good luck!

Thanks!

I submitted my query to a small publisher in Hawaii. Their instructions were explicit and they welcome unagented submittals. I have a collection of other books they published and I know some of their writers did not have agents so I just went for it.

The editor quit recently and the owner received my email and he wants to see my work. It was within 24 hours - yup, they are small. I'm all nervous and scared, but I know my book has to be "born." Of course, nothing has materialized yet because I haven't even submitted anything, but I can't believe that a publisher is even interested in my work.

I'm such a novice. I better read those links and blogs! Thanks... and I welcome any more input because I am clueless. It's like this book is my "baby." :)

The owner of the publishing house now wants me to submit my full manuscript within 30 days. :scared:

I have instructions in books on writing I bought in how to make a "dummy", but really....what do I do? lol It's different when it's a reality. ;)

Whatever you do, send a copy of your own manuscript to YOURSELF and keep the envelope sealed. This way, you can prove it's yours if copywriting issues come about.

FYI, my partner was in publishing for 16 years at Holtzbrinck/St. Martins Press. If you have any specific questions, go ahead and PM me and I'd be glad to pass them his way.
