I've been doing 30-45 mins on my elliptical machine 6 days a week. I haven't lost an ounce. My exercise before starting the elliptical was 0 minutes a day, 0times a week. LoL

I'm not eating anymore than before. So I'm wondering, could it really be I'm building muscle using an elliptical?? I didn't even think that was possible :confused3

Are you fitting better in your clothes?

Also, if you want to lose weight, you have to burn 3500 calories over what you take in to lose a single pound. That means exercise alone is rarely enough to lose weight. You need to reduce what you eat as well.

Weight loss is mostly diet.

You may not be eating any more than before but you may still be eating too much.

You won't gain muscle from a cardio only routine, though its not uncommon to retain water at the start of an exercise program due to sore muscles.

In 2007 I started using my elliptical religiously- never lost an ounce BUT everyone was telling me how great I looked. All I could see was that stupid number on the scale and became very discouraged then stopped exercising- DON'T DO THAT! Even if you aren't "losing" you are CHANGING your body in all the right ways! After a while maybe you can start to change your diet too- but keep on with that exercise!

You did not say how long, in terms of weeks, that you have been at it. It will take some time to see the numbers drop.
Keep a food and exercise journal. Write down everything you eat and how many calories. Watch the sodium, if you cut out many of the processed foods and table salt you will see a good drop on the scale. That will help inspire you to keep at it.

Many people say do not look at the scale, I look. Weigh yourself each morning before eating, w/o clothes. Your weight can fluctuate throughout the day. This was you really know where you are at.

Yep!

I just read somewhere that, for weight loss, diet is 85% of the mix and exercise is 15%.

I totally believe it.

I was eating normally and exercised for a year with weight loss result (just better fitness). The minute I started tracking my food and cutting back calories, it came off very quickly.

I've lost 50lb in the past year. I first started out by diet only and weight fell off. High protein meals and snacks. A rare sweet maybe once a week. Less bread, rice, and potatos (ie Carbs), I also realized my meals were too large. I tried cutting back to 1/2 my normal dinner and found out I was just as satisfied. I use protein drinks and meal bars, low fat cheese, some nuts (10 almonds or 15 peanuts at a time), hard boiled eggs. My nutritionist said the denser the food the better. And NEVER go hungry. You'll overcompensate later.

Yes, read the scale every day. It helps keep you on track and gives you an idea how diet/exercise relates to your weight. I do it first thing every morning.

Did you take measurements in the beginning? Ellipticals build lots of muscle which weighs more than fats because it's dense.

yep, this is true!

You will need to start cutting back calories in order to see the numbers on the scale go down. The elliptical will tone your legs up very nicely though (I'm hoping to buy a used one myself--we dropped our gym membership)
