Ughhhhhhhh
Out of the blue, I found out I need an extraction and implant. The whole 7-8 month timeline is probably the most difficult to swallow (well and the $3000 price tag).

For those of you that have been down this road, how did it go? Anything you wish you knew going in?

Thanks for any advice!

Other than the price and time without teeth it really is no big deal. I have had a few my dentist pulled the teeth, put in bone, and then the implant all in the same visit. After 3 months the implant was uncovered and a healing collar put on the implant to make a space for the new tooth. If I remember correctly that was left to heal for about two weeks before the final tooth was put on. However I know some dentists will pull the tooth and wait for it to heal then put in the implant and then wait again. I had no problems and other than having the tooth pulled it is no big deal. If it wasn't so expensive I would have all of my teeth done. So much better than false teeth.

agree with Nohal, works great but expensive. Be wary of cheap prices because they are not quoting everything you will need. I had my tooth pulled and had the implant put in in one visit as well

My mom had a couple implants. I remember she was in pretty severe pain after they drilled the posts in her jaw. However, the dentist remarked how strong her jaw bone was, so that could have played into it. They look great and like regular teeth, though, so I guess it's just the initial pain you have to get through. Best of luck to you!

My dentist is definitely going the route of extraction-waiting-post waiting-something-waiting final tooth. All in all it will be 7 months before I have a tooth in there.

Now I'm just crossing my fingers we don't have a benefits change since the final implant won't be able to go in until after the new year. If things go south with insurance-that will be totally oop and of course, is the most $$$!

Thanks for the experience perspective. It definitely makes me a little less apprehensive. I know this is the right way to go but I wish I could just do a one day root canal!

Can you elaborate on not quoting everything needed? I know there was an extra $300 because I'm vain and wanted a fake tooth thing to cover the hole but that was totally optional.

I was charged for the extraction, the bone which I needed due to bone loss in my jaw (may be age related), the implant, the healing collar after the implant is uncovered (looks like the top of a nut - think nut and bolt), and then the actual tooth. Since the teeth were in the back I didn't bother with any fake teeth just chewed on the other side. My dental insurance only paid for extraction and 1/2 of the actual tooth, I had to pay the rest. I had 2 implants put in and three teeth connected to them, I was already missing a back tooth. It cost me over $7,000 I think 8 years ago. I went to a dentist who specialized in implants and since his office was next to a ice rink used by an NHL team for practice I'm thinking he also worked on some of the hockey players. Make sure that the dentist you go to has done them before because I think now you can just take a course and be able to do them.

does it include the price to remove the bad tooth, or the price for the new porcelain tooth or just the implant

Basically each of the 4 steps comes with a price tag totaling $3kish for me.

The first step being removal, graft, restructure. Then 3 month was healing.

Step 2 CT scan and surgical guide

Step 3 implant placement am done 3-4 months healing

Step 4 implant crown

It is a long and expensive process but you will be happy with the end result. Good luck.

Sounds right, just do not think when you see ads for $999 they actually will do it for that

Don't feel bad, my dd is on a 10yr journey with getting her 2 implants! She was born missing 2 teeth (eye teeth up front). The ortho put braces on her and a place holders for the implants. Once her braces were off, she went ahead with the oral surgeon stuff.

She had a bone graft to grow bone (last yr), due to lack of bone for the implant, waited a few months, and then had the implant put in this Jan. This yr we were hoping to get the teeth, but we are going to wait it out till next yr. The implant surgery ate up all the insurance. This yr 2,800. Next yr, 800. She can wait. We have waited THIS LONG!

I am waiting on a specialist appointment at the end of next month.
I have two teeth that were broken when I was a child, the dentist has said that root filled teeth only last about 10 years, and mine have been over 20.
The dentist has said they likely outcome will be removal of the two teeth (front bottom) the implants.
This is likely to cost at least $5K per tooth, plus the infection that keeps cropping up in the jaw is affecting the tooth next to it, which likely needs a root canal as well(which will lead to another extraction down the road).

I am so gutted, I don't want to look like a hillbilly with two front teeth missing, nor do I want to spend all that money!

My dd wears a retainer with fake teeth in it. She does have to take it out when she eats.

My friend had one as an interim solution before her plant was done, she said it was really uncomfortable.
Also being the bottom teeth likely makes it more inconvenient, and I don't want to take it teeth to eat.
Argh! It's more the money I am worried about, so much stuff I would rather spend it on.

Can I ask if this is painful at each stage for many weeks? I am also supposed to have this done but starting a new job in 4 weeks time and don't want to start there in pain or unable to speak

The only pain I had (and it wasn't much) was from the extraction. Nothing else bothered me. I have had 3 implants. My friend had all her bottom teeth pulled and had 4 implants put in which anchored the entire bottom teeth. I don't know the exact price when it was all done but I'm pretty sure it was over $20,000. The only pain she had was the extraction.

Thanks - that is reassuring.
