I'm going today. The office mentioned dilating my eyes as part of the exam. I don't recall ever having this done before, unless I did and don't recall. Does it hurt? Is it necessary? Will I be able to drive myself home? Thanks!

I've had it done. No, it doesn't hurt. I was able to drive myself home with no problems.

It makes my eyes feel huge, but it doesn't hurt, and the blurriness I experienced went away after about 15 minutes or so.

DH is an optometrist. Dilating the eyes makes it easier for the doctor to view into the eye to assess the eye's health. If you have sunglasses, take them. Bright light will bother you a little more. (Of course, if you are having the weather we've been having, that won't be a problem.)

I've had it done several times. I don't know if it's because I wear my contacts while they're dilated but I have my vision "switches" for a few hours. I mean that my close vision gets blurry but I can see far away just fine!
It doesn't hurt.

I always get a massive headache after having this done. I do drive myself home but I really should not. The Dr usually has me wait a awhile so I can see better. I have such bad vision after the dilation I can't wear my glasses so it is dangerous for me to drive until I can wear my glasses again. Also the sun hurts my eyes so much I can hardly keep them open. They give me a disposable pair to wear but the sun still hurts my eyes and they water a whole lot.

Sorry for this explanation but thought you might want to hear the "other side"

My eye doctor makes sure you have a driver before he does it, however I did once drive myself home(under a mile) and it was horrible. I wouldnt do it again, but it was also very sunny out that day.
In general it doesnt really hurt me, its just an annoying feeling for a few hours.

It doesn't hurt but bring sunglasses. I was able to drive myself home but my eye's did feel sensitive to light.

It doesn't hurt but it does make your eyes sensitive. I prefer to have someone with me to drive me home. The Fl sun is too bright for me when my eyes are dilated.

It didn't hurt me. I've driven myself home and also 5 hours south. My big thing is my eyes become VERY sensative to light, I usually wear my sunglasses plus ones they give me together. I also wear contacts and do experience the blurry close vision someone else menationed.

Funny you should ask. I just drove home from having that done. The doctor gives you some dark glasses which fit behind your regular glasses. This time it did not give me a headache. It varies how much it effects me. Things are still blurry right now and I had it done about 2 hours ago.

was how bright the sun was next time Im wearing sunglassess and I needed a driver. when i got home I had to stay in darkness for the day.
