Hi -

Just turned 40 and looking to make a change to my hair. :) However, I have very short hair so I can't do too much with the style.

I've been toying around with the idea of dying it - and am thinking about going in the complete opposite direction of my current black hair color to platinum blonde. :scared1:

I'm not going to jump right into it - I just ordered a cheap platinum blonde wig from eBay so I can see what it would look like (against my skin color, etc.)

Just curious if anybody out there has ever made such a drastic color change and if so, what did you think? :confused3

I've got jet black hair. Back in October I dyed parts blue, but in order to do so I had to bleach it first. Well it was semi-perminate dye so after 2 weeks it started to fade. Finally, within the last week, its faded to blonde (faded to light blue then green). It looks cool. I really like it because its different from anything I've ever done (dark red, red, and light brown). A lot of my friends like it too. My friend at work freaked out with joy tonight because it was the first time she had seen it blonde. I didn't go all over though, its just underneith and about 8 sections.

I think the important part would be your skin tone. Are you pale, or tanned? I'm so pale, I could never go blonde---I'd just look like some beige girl from head to toe.

I have but I did it in stages. First, I went to a softer brown and added highlights. Then I just kept adding highlights about every six weeks until it was blonde all over. I had slightly longer than shoulder length hair and did not want to do it all in one shot in an effort to be kind to my hair. I have since gone back to a very dark brown - way easier to maintain!

My sister does hair and she told me that if I wanted it done all in one shot, they would basically be stripping all the color out of my hair at once and then replacing it with the blonde. It is very hard on your hair. YMMV.

Thanks for the replies so far - I can always count on you guys to have some experience/opinions on any subject. :)

I have a medium skin tone - not too pale, but not exactly olive tone. That's one of the reasons I bought the cheapo wig off of eBay - I am concerned about the overall "look".

My hair is jet black - so I do realize that the process will be quite a shock to my hair. IF I do decide to go through with this, I will certainly go to my salon - I would never attempt something like this on my own.

I realize that the upkeep will be pretty intense - but I've actually been coloring my hair since I was 17. Although I am jet black, the hair around my temples/ears/forehead have been gray (almost white) since my late teens. If I was gray all over, I would think about letting that grow out - but I only have it in those spots - jet black everywhere else!!

The wig should arrive in a few days - curious to see how I look ;)

Forgot to ask - what did you all do about your eyebrows? Keep them as is, or lighten them as well? :confused3

It will most definitely wreak havoc on your hair and most professionals wouldn't even recommend doing it. I've joked with my stylist about it (would never do it) and she always wants to smack me. And, I just have really dark brown hair, not even jet black.

Just prepare yourself that you may not get what you want out of it.

And yes, if your eyebrows are the same as your hair I would lighten them.
