Anybody ever delivered pizza

I'm considering taking a position delivering pizza in a summer shore town for the summer for Pizza Hut. I'm a substitute teacher and dh's job is looking shaky so at the last minute I"m trying to find a summer job. Has anybody ever done this? Will it seem odd for a 40 yo woman to do this? Any idea on type of pay? I'm wondering if this with the tips might pay better then the typical boardwalk low wage jobs. I'm not looking to get rich but would love to pick up an extra 400. per week.

My husband did this before I met him and he has a lot of fond memories of being the pizza guy.

He'd always get invited in to the party, on Sundays it was easy for him to keep up with the football scores, and once, a naked lady came to the door! :rotfl2:

We now have a lady about your age who delivers our pizza. When we get her, my husband makes sure she gets back to her car okay. (He's just nice that way.)

I'd do it if I were you!

I delivered pizzas for Pizza Hut long time ago.
At that time, I was paid min wage. Tips sucked.

Good luck.

This 39 year old just finished a 4 hour shift. Up until 4 weeks ago I was the assistant manager but decided to drive for the summer as it gives me more flexibility and I can work fewer hours. A few customers are surprised.

Pay wise I earn $7 per hr and don't have to do anything for that except be there and take deliveries.

I earn 0.90 cents per delivery this covers my fuel plus 50%. So if I make $10 I use about $6.66 worth of fuel and put $3.34 away for vehicle wear and tear. It adds up quickly.

Tips average $4.00 I had a $1.20 one tonight and a $13.00 one both orders were for $27.00.

I average 2 deliveries per hr, Fri at dinner it can be 5 or 6, but over an 8 hr shift it still averages 2 per hour. Once or twice on a Saturday I have averaged 3/hour.

Bottom line I use my per delivery .90 cents to cover fuel/wear and tear, Take $11.00 per hour ($7 plus one average tip) as my "pay" to replace my paycheck. Then throw the rest into our vacation jar. Tonight's 4 hour shift contributed $55 to the vacation jar but that is higher then usual. I am working 36 hrs per week instead of 44 and taking home the same money plus vacation funds. I am only doing this until the snow falls though. I also will not work past 8 once Fall comes, too dark. Currently I work Sat and Sun until 1am, it was scary at first but it takes the least amount of time away frm my kids and the tips are much better.

Thanks for the info. I live in a very small town, at the most 6 miles from end to end and a mile across. It is a busy summer town that is quite safe even at midnight which is when they close. They look pretty busy. This pizza hut only does delivery/takeout, mostly tourists. I will only work for the rest of the summer and won't worry about setting aside anything for wear and tear as I always do certain maintenance on my car before the school year starts. Would 100. dollars for an 8hr shift seem out of line?

also, is it common to get only 4hr shifts. That's really what I want but don't want to ask for short hours if it will prevent my getting a job.

$100 per 8 hr shift is the average.

I am lucky enough to be the one who sets the shifts. You should be able to get a 4hr shift on Fri and either Thurs or Sat. How our store shifts work:

Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday / Sunday
driver A 11-7
driver B 4 - 12

Thursday / Saturday

driver A 11-7
driver B 5 - 1am
driver C 4-8

Friday

driver A 11-7
driver B 5 - 1
driver C 4-8
driver D 5-9
and if we plan to be busy
driver E 4:30 - 8:30

we can also split shifts, I have someone who can work 8 to 12 on Monday night so I took the 4 to 8 shifts. I did quite well so I think I will take it on a regular basis. I also work
Friday 11 - 7, lots of car dealers, etc order lunches on Friday.
Sat 5 to 1am, great tip night, people tip better when their friends are over.
Sunday 4 to midnight, quiet easy night.

as well as one other shift, once DD is out of school this week that will be a 4 hr shift instead of 8 hrs.

Several years ago my husband did it as a second job down in PCB, FL. Spring Break and during the summer where awesome tips. He once recieved $100 for a tip!

But it is hard work and the wear and tear on your vehicle sucks. We had an older vehicle so it was not so bad.

Back then you got a $20 bank and I think .75 a delivery, so you wanted to make enough deliveries not to pay back the bank. He also got minimum wage per hour and his tips. He made more in tips during the summer and esp. SB than he did at his day job. I have heard though that business is not what it once was. I do not know about other areas.

One thing you'll have to ask yourself is how comfortable you are in that area. The man who moved across the street from my parents used to be a delivery man. Then one day he was attacked at one of his deliveries. The people had ordered just to lure him there and attack him. He has suffered permanent brain injury from it. He's a very nice guy, but I don't think that he can work due to the nature of his injury. You never know where you will be called. And we are not in a big city by any means. This is one of those medium sized towns where you will see many people you know when you are doing errands and crime rates are pretty low.

My DH delivered pizza for about 4 1/2 years - 3 1/2 years of college + a year after he graduated when he was looking for work. He usually worked days, 11 am - 7 pm & in a good week made about $400 per week. His delivery area included a college campus; and when he worked weekends in the Fall, they were always busy from people watching college & pro football games. He was paid minimum wage + tips. This was in Orange County, in Southern California.

My 40 yr old BIL has been delivering pizzas (Dominos) for several years as extra income. He only works weekend nights Fri-Sun, and seems to do pretty well. He likes it so much it's been hard to stop doing it, now that they don't need the money as much any more.

I delivered pizzas for Little Caesars for a couple years, while I was going to school.
I made minimum wage plus tips. My tips probably averaged an extra $10 per hour, but that really depends on how busy the store is and what time of day you are working. I'd work Friday night and do 15 or 20 deliveries in a 4 hours shift, then I'd work a day shift on Sunday and only take 4 or 5 deliveries all day. My tips usually averaged about $3 per delivery.

It was a fun job and in some ways, I miss it. I was in my 20's, but we often had delivery drivers in their 30's, 40's, and 50's. Lots of people do it as a second job to bring in some extra money. So you may not be the "typical" age for a pizza guy/girl, but you won't be the only older person either.
