If so, were you successful in getting rid of it? I am using my daughter's laptop to try and search for a solution.

Is this the one where you keep getting a popup saying viruses have been detected and you need to run a registry cleaner? If so, I've got that one right now. Right after I finish this post, Im going to run Malwarebytes. If you don't have that, it's a free download, and it's terrific -- been recommended by several people. If your comput er is really messed up (since you said you're working on another laptop), turn on your computer (the messed up one) and start hitting F8 repeatedly until the next screen pops up. You'll be in safe mode (it will look different). You can then safely to onto the internet, download Malwarebytes (.com), and run that.Good luck! I had an virus that crippled my system, and it took me two months (on and off) to completely get rid of it.

I went in and did System Restore on my son's computer - he's had it a couple of times now. Then I run his antivirus software after I get the restore completed.

run a malware/spyware program. You have to move quick because the virus will make it impossible for you to open any programs once you restart your computer so it needs to be the first thing you open.
Then run your antivirus. YOu will need to restart your computer a few times to get the programs open and it will take a few hours to get rid of it.

Also figure out the websites or programs being run at the time the virus appeared. Once I got it the first time, I became very prone to getting it again and again.

Finally I switched to a mac.

We just dealt with this yesterday.

The version we got disabled the F8 to start safe mode. Had to turn on the computer, then shut off the power in the middle of it booting up to get the option for safe mode to appear.

We used the built in system restore which worked, but even then Microsoft Security Essentials kept alerting. Used "SUPERAntiSpyware" and it seems to have gotten rid of everything.

Thanks for your replies. I cannot even restore it, because the virus seems to have disabled that function. I worked for about an hour and a half yesterday and didn't seem to get anywhere. I am thinking about downloading an spyware removal onto a disk via my daughter's laptop and then try to load it onto our desktop.

Any ideas on a good spyware-virus removal program from the internet?

Or is there one on the market that I could go purchase at Walmart, Best Buy etc., to load onto the computer?

My DW's computer had this last week - took me most of the week to really clean it up... I tried everything from MalwareBytes to SuperAntiSpyware, and nothing cleaned it up completely. It kept coming back. I finally got a copy of Kaspersky Ant-Virus and used the Boot-up CD option to thoroughly scrub the hard drive and got all of it off.

You can get Kaspersky at Best Buy.

If you had restore set up before this happened, you'll be able to restore it only if you do it from safe mode. Chooses "safe mode with networking" when starting up.

When you're done...you'll also have to make sure to delete all your temp files. This can be a pain because depending on how your computer is set up...they can be in a lot of places.

We had a really bad one recently. FYI if you have Malaware Bytes installed on your computer, you need to update it regularly to the newest version. Once we did that we were able to get rid of the problem. The viruses and spyware are changing all the time.
