Any web designers out there?

I'm curious about what a basic website design would cost--nothing fancy--8-10 pages total. I don't know what the going rate for that would be.

I'm a web designer. To be honest, that is a very vague question. In order to give a quote to a customer, I need a lot more information. Do they already have an existing logo? What sort of business am I making the site for? Are most of the pages similar in format? Is the text finalized or will I be expected to get it web-ready? Do you want me to do SEO (search engine optimization)? Will the site need any scripting? etc. etc. etc. We recently made a web site for an opera company and the price we agreed on was $1,000 (existing logo, no scripting, site is about 15 pages, SEO--we got him to #2 on google for the term of his choice in less than a month--that alone is worth well over $1,000), which was much lower than another quote he got.

For the most basic 10 page site, I would think a minimum of $500.

Or you can make your own. We use www.1and1.com it cost $30 bucks for 6 months. I didn't know anything about making a web page and it was really easy.

You could also check with a local community college or university that offers a web design or computer program.....I know that the web developers and programmers are always looking for a way to add to their portfolio. The head of the IT dept where I went to school was pretty knowledgeable about who could handle projects like this and would often put interested people in contact with the best student for the job.

How is the web design business, how is it doing in this economy? How many are self-employed? This is something I've always been interested in. I apologize if I took it off topic.

You are not off topic, tink. This was bumped by a spammer guy selling web design this AM. I saw the thread here from Paige (triple R) and was happy to see her, as she has not been around of late. Then I realized it was an old thread of hers from a little over three years ago.

I was thinking the same thing, Dan. I had not seen her in such a long time I clicked on the thread. Bummer that it wasn't really her .
