We're planning a summer trip to the area. Tell me the don't-miss sites. Also, recommend some lodging choices. I've been searching at vrbo.com and found some really beautiful cabins that I'm looking into.

In Vermont, we want to do the touristy stuff - Ben and Jerry's, Cabot Creamery, etc. But we also would like some basic outdoorsy stuff, relatively easy hiking trails, maybe some water sports. Same stuff for New Hampshire - cable car ride, Mt. Washington, Flume, etc.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Definitely go on the Kangamangus highway in New Hampshire; it's a 16 mile two lane road (someone should file a fraudulent claim for using the word highway to describe the road ;) ) up and down through a small mountain peak, and to quote the song, on a clear day you can truly see forever....

The views are truly stunning, and during peak foliage in the fall, it's my favorite place on the planet, despite all the people around me with the same idea.

Here's a web site with more information;

Hope this helps!

There are so many things to see and do in NH. Within a few hours you can go from the mountains to the beach! Where in NH are you planning to be? Are there any children coming on this trip?
Try this website for info www.visitnh.gov

I definitely second this suggestion. I highly recommend the Wildcat gondola over Loon or Cannon because at Wildcat, you're right across from Mt. Washington. It is gorgeous. If you like waterfalls, just down the road from Wildcat is Glen Ellis Falls. It's about a 5 or 10 minute walk into the falls, and they're very impressive. Also just down the road is Jackson Falls. The ride into Jackson Falls is nice, a few minutes through a very stereotypical New Hampshire town, even riding through a covered bridge.
The Flume is gorgeous. Also you might want to check out the Basin, which is right off of 93, probably 5 minutes from the Flume. Very short walk, to a really unique piece of nature.
And if your wife and daughter like shopping, North Conway is outlet capital of NH, and it's all sales tax free

As far as Vermont is concerned, you have just about covered it. There is a very unique museum in Shelburne,Vt. called the Shelburne Museum. I would suggest checking it out on-line because it is difficult to describe. It's historic buildings that where taken apart and rebuilt on the site with all historic furnishings etc. But it is much more than that. There is a side wheel steamboat that was moved from Lake Champlain to it's permanent spot on the grounds and a film showing how it was done. Antique equipment, objects and creations. Great place! Check it out. Vermont has many hiking areas the largest is the long trail but there are so many others. Rivers for canoeing and mountains for climbing, either by car or on foot. Scenery to die for and very nice friendly people.

We live in Meredith NH which is the lakes region. I always recomend the Science Center in Holderness nh. :thumbsup2

Have to second the Science Center at Holderness...our kids loved it when they were young. (hubby's sis and her DH live on Winnepesaukee and we love to visit there). We also like the small museum (don't know the name) on the road into Wolfeboro and we like Wolfeboro itself too, for just walking around with an ice cream.

Is the place that they showed on HGTV/Food network in NH/Vermont?

Its a restaurant and glass shop that's right on a river and they use the water from the waterfall as some of their energy source. It's a famous glass artist. Geez, that's not much of a description, but hopefully someone knows. :teeth:

I don't know how old your kiddos are or even if you have any, but if they are still young you might check out StoryLand in Glen, NH. I have many wonderful memories of my kids there when they were young. Everyone gave you great advice. NH and Vermont are beautiful. ENJOY!!

I think I know where you mean. Rachael Ray did a "Vermont on $40 a Day" episode and she had lunch at a place like you describe. Don't know why I specifically remember that detail. :confused3

From the food network website details, she was at "Simon Pearce" and in Quechee VT there is indeed a restaurant with that name connected to a glass and pottery workshop.

It's only about 2 hours from here in Saratoga ... road trip! :moped:

Just a couple miles from Shelburne Museum is Shelburne Farms. Originally built by Lila Vanderbuilt Webb and William Seward Webb as their family home, it is now an Inn and a working dairy farm (they make award winning cheddar cheese and recently began an award winning winery). My husband and I visited last September for the first time ever and loved it so much we returned last month for another visit! The location is just so beautiful Nestled between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondacks of New York....on the shore of Lake Champlain...if I had the money, it's where I'd live!!! :goodvibes

The Vermont Teddy Bear Company is located in Shelburne, Vermont. The factory is located there and they give tours, showing how the bears are made. They also have a snack bar and ice cream stand.

Of course, they have every size, shape, color, and syle of teddy bears for sale, along with cute accessories. The bears aren't cheap, but they are adorable and make a cute gift!
