My next vacation will be with my 23 y/o sister who is a vegetarian, and my health food obsessed mother...

DH and i are fine with a once ina while splurge but...

Do places like Ohana offer anything vegetarian for those who dont eat meat?

Thanks in advance! I would love to hear your experiences!
Jenny

No worries! There aren't too many restaurants at WDW I haven't eaten at! :thumbsup2 I've never had a problem getting a vegetarian meal anywhere, even without advance notice.

We ate at Ohana for the first time in May and I was very impressed! The chef came out to see me when we were seated and discussed what I might like. He made a fabulous tofu dish (I really shouldn't start thinking about it now because it will just make me hungry!!) After the meal the chef came back out to make sure I enjoyed it. What fabulous service! :goodvibes

ETA: I didn't call in advance but did let them know at the podium, when we checked in. Just want to clarify that.

Disney was fabulous with dietary requirements; my DM must eat gluten-free and they made wonderful suggestions at every meal.

It's easy to be Vegetarian (cheese, dairy milk, egg eating vegetarian) at WDW
but it's a bit more tricky to be Vegan (no animal products).

I have read that Ohanas will offer a Tofu to those who don't eat meat.
I'm not sure if you have to request ahead of time or whenever you check in.
I know that Ohanas has Brocolli and Noodles (don't think there is any meat added to these). I have also heard that if you let Ohana know they also have
a Ice Cream substitute (like either soy icecream or rice icecream).

Bomas is a good place for Vegetarians. There is plenty to choose from.

Also check out "The Wave" Restaurant--it has a Veggi options.

I know there are several Restaurants in WDW that now offer Veggi choices.
There is also a book about where to eat Vegetarian at WDW, I haven't purchased it but I know there is one.
Have a Fun Trip!

Yes I am too so i totally understand! The one day I didnt say "Gluten free" i was very sick! I learned my lesson!

thanks so much u guys- Ohanas is my favoriteplace and I wanted my sister to share in it!

This is very do-able at disney. I have traveled with my dsister (vegetarian) and my dniece (vegan) and both have been very please with plenty to eat. Boma was a favorite. At the buffet places the chefs will come out and walk the buffet and tell you what you can and cannot eat. The other places a chef came out and went through the menu as welll as offered another choice if needed. Also look in the dining reviews for some by V gan she is vegan and her SO is vegetarian and they do great reviews. Have a good trip.

We have never had a problem at any of the restaurants getting vegetarian meals. Boma probably had the best selection.

Boma is probably one of the best places if you have food allergies or restrictions. I can not have any form of soy and they made me a special desert.

I've eaten vegetarian at Ohana several times. I usually ask them to note that there's a vegetarian when I call to make the reservation and then let them know again when we check in at the restaurant. They've always been more than happy to make me a vegetarian entree as well as let me know which of the family style side dishes and such are vegetarian.

You will be able to get at least one vegetarian meal at every Disney-run restaurant, even if it's not on the regular menu.

Some of the restaurants that I like the best in terms of their vegetarian food (this is totally personal preference though, and I've certainly eaten at other Disney restaurants and had good meals - Le Cellier used to have this super delicious stuffed pepper dish...I miss it so bad):

Table Service
Boma - lots of choices
San Angel Inn (you have to ask for the vegetarian menu because nothing on the regular menu is vegetarian)
Teppan Edo (not too many choices but the vegetables are good and if you ask, they are good about cooking the veggies on the grill and serving me *before* putting anyone's meat on there to cook)
The Wave (love the veggie sandwich on the lunch menu, never tried the vegetarian stew on the dinner menu - it's mushroom based which I do not like)
The Plaza Restaurant (really tasty veggie sandwich and sometimes the soup of the day is a good veggie chili)
Mama Melrose (flatbread pizzas particularly)
Tusker House - lots of choices - the chef took me around the buffet and told me what was vegetarian and what wasn't

Counter Service
El Pirata Y El Perico (tasty bean tacos or the taco salad can be made with beans instead of meat)
Columbia Harbour House (veggie chili and yummy hummus/broccoli slaw sandwich)
Sunshine Seasons (several choices)
Tangerine Cafe (a couple of choices - a vegetarian combo platter and falafel)

Places I would avoid
All of the restaurants in China - Even those things labeled vegetarian are cooked in chicken stock or have fish paste

Yak and the Yeti - only veggie choice is some green bean appetizer or one of the chicken or shrimp salads without the chicken or shrimp - unfortunate because I love the theming of the restaurant

Wanted to let the PP poster know that my sis and niece went to yak and yeti TS and the chef came out and talked to them and made them some special dishes. They said they were so yummy. I know there is almost nothing on the menu so I did not plan on us going there, but they were able to get a table as a walk up and had what they said was a delicious lunch. I was very surprised.

Also all counter service places have a binder you can request to see that lists all ingrediants. As a vegetarian it may not be as important but as a vegan it is very helpful.

Good to know that things have changed since I ate there (shortly after it opened). I may have to try it again.

When I ate there it seemed like I was being a big hassle to them wanting to eat vegetarian food, and the manager basically lied to me and told me that if I got the lo mein without shrimp that it would be vegetarian. I specifically asked if it was cooked in chicken stock and was told no, of course it's not. When I ordered it, the server fortunately asked me if I was ordering it without shrimp because I was vegetarian. When I said yes, he said it was cooked in chicken stock.

I am really not being critical at all, I am just ignorant about veggie meals. Would it have done you harm, i.e. gastric upset to eat the chicken stock, or is it philosophical, i.e. and animal was killed to make this? I have a coworker who is a veg. and I want to be more informed, but don't feel comfortable asking directly yet.

Princessmom, it will depend on the vegetarian/vegan. We all make the choice for different reasons. For me, I became a vegan for health reasons but it's an ethical thing for me too. Would I be terribly upset about chicken stock, like my vegetarian sister? Probably not, BUT, I would get sick. I get sick from almost all processed foods now, I suppose my body has gotten used to eating mostly veggies & fruit (I'm actually a raw vegan, but it's nearly impossible to do at WDW, so I just at vegan there)

I would agree with this. I had a very difficult time at CS, but TS was wonderful! They sent out the chef and I explained what I could eat and they showed me everything I could have (Boma).

If you are just a vegetarian, there are lots of options and even some vegan ones if you eat bread (I don't). We made sure we have 1 TS a day this upcoming trip so I can be sure to eat!

thanks for the answer!!! Any info I can get is helpful!!

I have eaten at many Disney restraunts as a vegetarian (have been one since I was 11 yrs old) and I rarely encounter any problems. Im pretty flexible about it although I do not like many varieties of vegetables and not care for tofu. The only place I encountered the attitude like I was putting them out was at Tutto Italia in Epcot. All I was asking for was fett. alfredo with no meat and you would think I was nuts. :confused3 At Chef Mickey the waitress said something to me when she saw my plate pretty empty and I said yes I am a vegetarian, a few min later the chef came out and we talked and he made up a delicious special dish for me. It was nice. Im sure there wont be many problems, just for TS places, you may want to let them know in advance when you book your ADR or even go by the podium the day you get there and let them know I have reservations later and there is a vegetarian in our party. Have fun!

My overall impression is that for a lacto-ovo-vegetarian who likes a wide variety of foods, there is always at least one item on just about every menu. If you're a picky vegetarian, vegan, or have health-related restrictions as well, then it's a little harder and you'll probably need to talk to the chef.

I agree that you should read v_gan's reviews, she's vegan and she travels with her lacto-ovo-vegetarian boyfriend.

Three veggie things I'm especially looking forward to: the vegetarian flatbread wraps at the Outpost in MK, hummus sandwich at Columbia Harbour House, and the veggie dish at Kouzzina. Oh, and breakfasts. I *love* a good breakfast.

(Since princessmom was asking, personally I practice what some people call "ethical eating." I eat meat occasionally but only if I know it's from a source that treats its animals well. I don't object to killing and eating animals since that's nature at work; but I think it's unfair and wrong of humans to treat them badly beforehand. There are some places at WDW that do have free-range and other organic meats and I'm also particularly looking forward to the roast beef sandwich at Wolfgang Puck Express.)

You know it's funny that you bring the treatment of food animals up. I used to work in the poultry industry( was the feed nutrition chemist), and everyone asks me if I still eat chickens. The answer is yes, b/c our birds we taken care of better than we were at times! I agree with you that some processers us inhumane practices and that is wrong, but you would be suprised at the treatment that some give their animals. OK, stopping before I get on a meat soapbox in front of a bunch of veggies. Thak you so much for all the info. I really do feel better informed, at least by a littel, and I have some more sources for information!!

I'm a vegetarian and have had lots of good experiences at Disney restaurants. I'd definitely have her plan and look at menus (especially of CS places), because it's horrible to be hungry and walking around aimlessly with nothing to eat. Ohana has some delicious options! I adored the salad, noodles, and broccoli. :thumbsup2
