Is there ever a problem with carrying a tripod loose on board a plane? Or should I have it in a carry-on big enough to hold it? I was considering one of those Lowepro bags with a slot on the side for the tripod but I wasn't sure if that would be a problem when I tried to board the plane and then it's too late to go get the proper bag.

And also, I still haven't figured out exactly how I'm going to carry this thing around in a park all day. :P

The TSA permits tripods without any problems. However, the airline may give you an issue if it's too large. Also, it may be counted as a separate carry-on item. That can vary from one airline to another, or even from one gate agent to another.

Mine is too large to fit in one of those carry-on size things, so I just pack it inside my suitcase. To carry it around, I have a strap that attaches to the neck and legs. I just sling it over my shoulder and I'm off.
