any school teachers go to disney when school is in session?

I am married to a former teacher, he is now an administrator who works 12 months. He gets vacation time and we don't take vacations during the school year. He never took a vacation while he was teaching either. We got married in the summer, and always went on vacation while the kids were off. You knew what you were getting in to when you got the job. It is your job to be there during the year, suck it up and deal with the crowds.

Glad my former administrators didn't feel this way. All of my principals said, "family first." It makes for a much nicer working environment.

In NYC we accumulate 1 day per month. You can use two of those per year as "personal business" days - with your principal's approval. I don't think there's a rule against using them the day before or after a break as I've known people who have done that. But you better have your email from the principal approving it or a doctor's note that you were sick.

If they discover that you used a sick day for personal business without approval (and with things like Facebook, twitter, and just people talking) there can be consequences up to termination of employment.

If you're requesting a personal business day, you don't have to tell them what the personal business is, and they're not allowed to ask.

I am a teacher in Massachusetts, and this year the Jewish holidays bump up against a weekend. Therefore, we are leaving Wednesday afternoon as soon as school gets out and staying through Sunday. We would take personal days for Tuesday and Wednesday, but our system prohibits granting personal days that bump up against holidays. We could use sick days to get more days, but the anxiety that would create for me would wreck the trip, so I am content with 4 nights.

Not this teacher; I'd definitely get busted for using sick days! Speaking as a breast cancer survivor, I believe sick days are for sick days and doctor appointments. I suppose I could take unpaid leave but that completely screws the retirement. Anyways, I'd feel incredibly guilty and I won't pull my kids from school. We have plenty of vacation time; just returned from a week in Manhattan.

We have a fall break which is usually during Columbus Day week; not packed but a bit crowded. This year it's the week before Columbus Day! We are using the Monster Code; hoping for low crowds. I suspect my school system is going to discontinue the fall break; very bummed because it is a good vacation week.

I dream of going to WDW during a low crowd month. I'll wait until retirement.

Teacher in PA! We usually go in the Fall-November or first week in December. I use my personal days and try to incorporate that into a holiday. This year I am using 4 personal days to go Nov 6-13 because we get the 11th off for Veterans day. Sometimes we go the week after Thanksgiving because we always get the following Monday off for dear hunting! Those are our favorite times to go as it is way to HOT in the summer to enjoy it! :teacher:

Nope. :sad2: I get only 2 "personal" days each year. Even combined with a long weekend, we wind up feeling too rushed. We find that it works best for us to do a whole week, so we go during school vacations.

We HAVE gone Thanksgving weekend --too crowded! -- and the week before Xmas -- ideal! -- and now will be trying the last week in August, before school starts here.

It is so interesting the different policies. I am a special ed teacher in MN. In my district, we get 12 sick days and 3 personal days a year. The sick days accumulated. We can bank 2 personal days but can't have more then 5 in a year. Personnel days can be used for any reason as long as three days notice is given. They do limit the number to 2-3 teachers per day out on personal leave depending on the number of teachers in the building. We can also take days without pay (which is frowned on) and if we do that we have to pay for our sub. I am fine using personal days for a vacation since my contract allows that. I did a week long trip in October 2008 and am going again this November. For both trips I am using scheduled days off plus personal days.

Wow. I am so glad our district supports us as teachers and as human beings...mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, etc.

We are teachers and knew what we were getting into, true. Life happens, even to teachers and there are reasons why we are given the personal days.

i am a teacher and i took off work in dec. 2008 for a disney vacation. we tried to schedule our trip around a weekend so we didn't have to take off as much tho...
my principal was really cool about it...(she knew i was getting engaged in WDW which made her more understanding maybe?)...but she knows how important it is for us to take time for ourselves..even if it is during the school year.
even though my boss is cool about me taking days off during school, its def. not something that's overdone...throughout the rest of the school year, i rarely even take a sick day.

My husbands district does value their teachers as people, which is why they are given "personal business days". He never used his personal days for vacation because god for bid some thing happened (ie death in the family, medical issues with me or the kids) he wouldn't have been able to take off because he used those days for a vacation. He is a professional and acted accordingly.
