Any recommendations for a parasol?

DD and I are pale redheads so going in the summer does not make me happy! But we are tagging along with my husband to his conference so we have no choice on dates. We went to USH on our last trip and it was horribly hot with awful long lines. A super nice lady in one line had an umbrella and shaded DD with it. I think I need to get myself one. Should I just bring an umbrella or is there an actual parasol for sun shading? Do black umbrellas feel hot in the sun? Is there anything I need to worry about with security for getting one? I know I’m going to look like a weirdo since most people enjoy the sun but no amount of constant sunscreen application is enough for us in the sun.

I totally understand. I am olive-skinned and dark haired, but have to keep as much sun off my face as possible or I get terrible dark spots. My favorite sunblock is Blue Lizard as it is just super powerful and effective, and I always wear a hat with SPF 50 rating, but I have yet to try a sun parasol. When we were at Tokyo Disneyland last June, a ton of people were using sun parasols. It's just more of a regular thing in Japan. I just took a quick look on Amazon and they have travel size umbrellas with SPF ratings that are made as much for sun protection as rain protection. I don't see why anyone at Dland would have an issue with you and your daughter using these. Who knows, maybe you'll inspire a whole new fad in SoCal.

They actually sell them, with designs to choose, at Disneyland. Could just do that...

I thought I would use mine more, but ultimately it was just another way to get in peoples’ way and another thing to keep track of, so I’ve never brought it back. I’d rather use a hat.

I use an umbrella all the time here in Ireland as it rains ALOT, winter and summer :) It gets real annoying holding an umbrella for a few hours in a crowded areas. It continually gets in peoples way and you have to hold it sideways or high above peoples heads to let people pass. Its very different to talking a stroll in a park with a parasol or umbrella. Personally I dont bring my umbrella to Disneyland California, but I do use on other days of my vacation, like on the beach.

A parasol or regular umbrella will do NOTHING to keep you cool on a hot sunny day. You need a UV BLOCKER umbrella. It should have a silvery inner lining. We have two, purchased from Amazon and they are seriously the most amazing things. When you stand under them, there is NO heat from the sun on you. They literally are like being under an impermeable roof. We bring them to Disneyland on all our summer park days (we are locals). The only negative is that they are kind of heavy. They are compact in size, but the material they use makes them about 1.5x heavier than a regular umbrella. They are absolutely worth it though.

Thank you so much DLGal! I’m hoping this makes waiting in line in the sun tolerable!

This +10. I bought a small, UV lined parasol in Little Tokyo and works really well.

Hat. I can not be out in the sun anymore without a hat. Several years ago I actually got what i can only describe as "sun sick" while at Disneyland. I immediately bought a hat and now will not go out in the sun without one.

We like Solumbra brand sun protecting umbrellas. We have a travel size one that has gone with us to DLR and all over the world. After many years, it's still holding up well and doing the job! The Solumbra hats and Tilley hats also work well for serious sun protection.

I think I'd rather go for a super good sunblock with frequent reapplication, UV blocking clothes, and a wide brimmed UV blocking hat. I find personal sized umbrellas/parasols of any kind trap the heat radiated up from concrete/asphalt and can get pretty unbearable unless there is a good cool breeze blowing. We used to go to the Reno Air Races and tried small umbrellas but our seats were on the tarmac and we were cooler without them.

A friend of ours who has had basal cell gets his block on prescription from his dermatologist. He and my DH wear UV block shirts from REI. They aren't the 'cutest' but they are light weight, they're OK looking, and the women's version has cute colours. I know that there are 'swim shirts' that are UV blocking, although I don't know how cool they'd be. I have a UV blocking hat from Scala hats that I like a lot. Actually, I have three of them. I don't wear them at DL because there is no string to it and it's a hassle to keep stowing it for rides.

That's been my experience with parasols and umbrellas in large tourist areas. As in, I've come close to getting poked in the eye a number of times when someone stops suddenly, or decides to rest the umbrella on their shoulder instead of holding it up.

I feel the same way - these are at best an annoyance and at worst a hazard for those around you.

I’ve never used one, but I can’t imagine they are unworkable in the states but helpful in Asia. If you want to try one, I totally would-obv you’d be careful about poking folks around you just like you would if you had an umbrella in the rain.

I've seen a few umbrellas used in the parks. It might get challenging on crowded days.
As for heat, I like to pick up the small battery fans from the dollar store.
Having air movement really helps me in the heat.

I bought small fans that connect to the plug adapter on my cell phone. Small and convenient!
Search for smartphone fan on Amazon.

I use the parasols that you can buy in the park every time I go. For me there is no amount of sunscreen that will keep from burning if I’m not shaded. I also get overheated easily so wearing long sleeve clothing doesn’t work for me.

I mostly use the parasol when I’m in line or waiting for a parade. Getting through a crowded area I’ll just put the parasol away until I’m in an area I can use it again.

It’s a life safer when waiting inline for Haunted Mansion!!
