Hi all !

My boyfriend is a BIG Nascar fan and he and I will be in LA / OC in January 2009 (13-21st). I am going to a convention in Long Beach for a few days then we will reposition to Anaheim to do Disney for a few days before we return to Canada and the cold !

I am a big Disney fan but he has never been. While I'd be happy with Disney everyday, I don't see him liking that suggestion. I was looking to see if there are any races (obviously not Nascar as the season won't have started yet) but something similar in that general area ?

Thanks for any suggestions !
Julie

H is a big Nascar fan. I have no idea when the season starts but look into Irwindale Speeday, Perris Speedway (dirt track) and there's one in San Bernardino. Those are the 3 that I know. Irwindale Speedway is the closest one. You probably know about the Turkey Race during Thanksgiving. Once in a while Tony Stewart and a few other former open wheel racers compete in that.

Hey Julie,

While I was born and raised out in the Los Angeles area back in the 80's and early 90's. The only kind of racing that was in January was the AMA Supercross series at Anahiem stadium. It was always a fun event when I went every year.

These days, Its not the AMA supercross, But Anahiem does have a supercross series event held in January on 1/17/09 at Anahiem stadium. It is round 3 of the series. You can look it up via ticketmaster.com.

It is their 2nd of 3 visits to the stadium in just a matter of 5 or 6 weeks. Not sure why they race there 3 times now as they only had 2 races at Anahiem when I was growing up. Back then, It used to be one event in January and one event in March. My guess is, Because they dont race at the Los Angeles Coliseum and the Rose Bowl anymore.

When it comes to auto sports in general, November, December and January are the 3 slowest months for any kind of auto racing. Hope this helps.

Yeah - too bad about us going in the slow months.

(Actually - its' not too bad - there's so many other things to do. If there were car racing going on, we'd have to add THAT to my already packed list of things to do !)

Shhh... don't tell my BF I said that... :rolleyes1

Well, I believe Nascar doesnt hit Southern California till late Febuary as I dont follow nascar, Because I am more into open wheel racing, But the biggest race of the year for Southern California is in April when the Long Beach grand prix takes place on the streets of Long Beach.

Of course, I dont know how things will be in the future as this past April was the last year that CART will race at Long Beach which was a exciting event being there on the 25th anniversary of being there for my first race.

It felt very strange as my first race at Long Beach was the last formula one race held at Long Beach and I was there for the last CART race held at Long Beach. I consider that spooky to say the least, But I dont see the Indy Racing League being popular in the coming years at Long Beach. I just dont think they will get the crowds anymore as most europeans arent that interested in the Indy Racing League. I could be wrong. Who knows.

Anyways, I am not sure if this might interest you, But why not take a look at this http://www.speedzone.com/ It is like a auto racing amusement park.

CanadaJulie, it looks like you are going to miss Nascar short track racing at Irwindale by a few days unless you want to stay a couple of days later....

NASCAR All-Star Showdown Date is Moved to January NASCAR PR Report
Camping World Series Event Will Still take Place at Irwindale
The NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown will be coming at you in January, 2009.
In a change that further cements the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown as the ‘Daytona 500 of short-track racing,’ NASCAR announced today that the sixth edition of the postseason special event will be held Jan. 23-24, 2009 at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.
