We are going to book a 2 week vacation during the Olympics - a week disney cruise and then a week in disney, or vice versa.
I seriously do not want to deal with the traffic, the crowds, the increased prices on everything and have NO desire to go to any of the Olympic stuff at all.
I personally really disagree with us hosting them when there are so many things that need to be done for this city that could use that money....but I won't even go there right now...

DD moved to Vancouver - says all the building, road improvements, rail systems will be great. Agree though, it will be nuts during the Olympics-better stock your shelves before the prices go up even more!

I haven't decided yet. The problem is with the Paraolympics afterwards and all the crap that leads up to both sets of games it will likely mean being away for 6 weeks to escape it all.

You're right, you'd have to be gone from the 2nd week in February until the last week in March to miss it all.

My sister is from Vancouver and we decided last year that we will take off for two weeks during the Olympics. Of course we wouldn't go to any events anyhow - heck, at the prices they are asking, we could not afford to!! I agree that Vancouver cannot afford to host them although some of the road and skytrain improvements are necessary. Maybe a couple of weeks in Hawaii...:goodvibes

Either of you from Vancouver area, or others on the boards who would be interested in renting out your houses/apartments while you are gone, and we will visit, let me know as we would be very interested.;)

Totally agree-the skytrain expansion to the airport and road repairs/changes from Vancouver to Whistler are definitely necessary improvements. How soon they would have been made if the Olympics weren't in Vancouver is another question.

I for one am excited about the Olympics. I understand that the development and infrastructure building is not agreeable to everyone. However, I think it is an opportunity to improve on certain parts of the Lower Mainland that desperately need it. Not to mention it provides employment opportunities for everyone.

The Sea-to-Sky Hwy has always been treacherous to drive. I have recently driven that hwy and have experienced first-hand the before-and-after improvements on that hwy -- a much, much safer drive for everyone who commutes on that hwy. The skytrain that is going to run from Richmond to downtown Vancouver -- a vital line that connects 2 important municipalities. The new housing that will be built for Olympic athletes will be used as low income housing post-Olympics.

Again, my opinion may not be agreeable to everyone, but I am all for progress and opportunity.
