I am extremely prone to it and there are rides that make me nervous to ride. I don't want to end up ruining my day at WDW or my family's day either. DH thinks I'm a baby (he's just picking of course.) Anyways, have you figured out ways to help prevent it so you can enjoy the rides? I thought about dramamine (sp?) but I read that it makes you drowsey and it can make you irratable so that's a no go for the happiest place on earth. Are there any solutions or do we need a bench dedicated to us where we sit and wait for our hubbys? lol

DH and DS are very prone to motion sickness. It is trial and error what makes DS sick and DH will not even try anything that has even the potential. We have done the dramamine stuff but it really does make you sleepy in the park. A little less so if you take the 24 hour stuff at night, every night. What we did this trip for DS as a combination of ginger extract and the sea bands. It worked just as well as the dramamine. He does avoid spinning rides like the tea cups and astro orbitor. He can do most other things but with a max of two times close togehter. WE really pretty impressed. DS is 14 so pretty much like an adult.

I have a tendency to get motion sick also. (Learned the hard way that snorkeling is not one of the things I can do!) I usually do ok with roller coasters, but will steer clear of the teacups! I am looking forward to reading the responses to this post...I'm a little concerned about Soarin' so any feedback on that would be great! And I've heard to stay away from Mission Space too. Thanks for any help...this board is the best!:cheer2:

I have been on Soarin' at both DL and WDW. When I went on the ride at DL, I was on the lowest level (there are three levels) because I have a fear of heights. I did not get motion sick. Last May, the whole family went on Soarin' in WDW and we were on the top level. (I knew what to expect, so I wasn't so afraid of the height). Both my dh and I got really bad motion sickness. I got it to the point where I had to close my eyes for the last few minutes or so. I think it was because we were so high up. We didn't get a chance to try it again on the lower level.

So, I would first try it on the lowest level. I'm not sure if it will help you, but that was my experience. :)

I am way to chicken to try Mission Space or the Teacups for fear of losing it on the ride:rotfl2:

I am horrible about rides. There are several that I don't ride. Last year I tried a few when we were at WDW, some I won't do again. But this year I will try a few others. Last year I rode Test Track, and BTMRR. I won't do them again. But this year I will try space mountain and the easy Mission Space.

The DH and the kids really want me to do them all, so I compromise. While they are riding the rides that I won't, I go shopping. :rotfl: I LOVE to go into all the Disney shops and casually shop. I don't buy something every time. They hate the time I spend window shopping, I'm wasting time. So we split.

You might want to try Bonine. I works similarly to Dramamine but doesn't make you drowsy. I use it when I cruise and have had good luck with it.

I've heard that ginger works really well (pure ginger root, crystallized, tablets, candy, tea, or cookies). I read in thetravelinsider.info that "A 1982 study found that ginger was better than Dramamine for preventing seasickness." There are no side effects from taking ginger.

Also there is a a less-drowsy formula of Dramamine, but I think it still makes you a bit drowsy (but I guess not as much as the original formula).

I would think that simulator rides (i.e., Star Tours, Mission: Space) would seem to bring on motion sickness more than other types of rides.

Wow This has turned into a good post. I'm so glad you know an alternative (ginger) for motion sickness. The rides that I had trouble on are well... most of them. LOL I'm fine with the drops and everything or water rides. But really fast rides that toss you around, I feel like I'm still flying around the track about an hour after I get off, and anything spinning.... I'll loose my cookies ON the ride for sure. I've done similar rides to the tea cups before, but I was a child then so I really don't know if I could handle it. It's sad when a 22 year old woman has to contemplate if she will be able to ride Dumbo with her daughter. I may have to "test" out this ginger idea before we go. Maybe I'll take a spin around in the yard, like we all did as a kid and see how I do.:rolleyes1 my thing with spinning is so bad that when I spin my daughter around I can only do it 4 times TOPS with out feeling sick. LOL I can't even withstand the mommy ride.

P.S. Shopping sounds like a really good idea! I may just get "nervous" About a ride if I see a good shop.:thumbsup2

I have had to deal with motion sickness my whole life. Mt mother would have to give me Dramamine on every family vacation -- just for the car ride! I have avoided lots of rides due to it. However, when my DH and I took our two kids to WDW a few years ago, I was able to ride several rides I didn't think I would be able to handle. I took Dramamine -- it does not make me sleepy.

I actually rode the Tea Cups with my family. Since my DS also tends to get motion sickness as well, we just took it real easy. We just basically rode in our own tea cup and did not spin it. I rode Big Thunder Mountain Railroad a couple of times and even Goofy's Barnstormer once. I also rode Aladin's Magic Carpets with my DS and he and I both did fine. I also rode the ride in AK that is very similiar to this ride with my DD. It is beside Primevil Whirl. I DID NOT attempt it!! I did not go on Star Wars or Mission Space either. There was only one option for Mission Space back then.
Good Luck to All
I wonder if Body Wars is okay?

I have had severe motion sickness all of my life. Dramamine is the only thing that works for me, but it does make me sleepy. I have to take it for the car/plane. I take the max amount and just sleep. At WDW I just skip most rides that I think will bother me. I was able to do Soarin' and the non-spinning MS last trip. I did okay with both. I can do the carousel, but I am glad when it is over!
Just remember, different people are bothered by different things. Some think sims are okay because they don't really move, some think the opposite. Some people can do coasters, but they can't stand to spin. Some people get sick just watching the circle vision movies.
I am scared to try ginger. I think my level of motion sickness is too extreme. Non-drowsy dramamine and bonine are the same drug. I tried bonine once and had terrible side effects (I felt like I had concrete blocks tied to each limb, it was WORSE than being drowsy.)
I think it is all trial and error as far as what bothers you and what works for you. Just remember, you CAN take dramamine after the fact if you feel sick. You just may have to go back to the room and sleep it off. No ride is worth getting sick to me. When I get motion sickness I will literally feel sick for days unless I take dramamine. HTH.
BTW, you are not being a baby. Motion sickness is a real condition, it has to do with the inner ear and balance. I actually feel sick when I just lay down without a pillow. People who have never had motion sickness don't understand how terrible it is. They also think you get off the ride, barf, and go on your merry way to the next ride. NOT TRUE!!! Folks have been seen being taken away in wheelchairs from the big coasters! Also, some people who never had motion sickness before may develope it when they get older. It is awful, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. One of the reasons I love WDW, though, is there is still so much I CAN do!!!

I assume since you have never taken dramamine that you don't get sick in the car or plane? In that case, I would just start slow and try everything if I were you. In the UG they suggest starting on the Barnstormer, then trying BTMR, and then SM. Only try RNRC or EE after being succesful on the others. You could try the teacups, just don't spin so much. ST and BW are different because they are simulators but are jerky. Those might just be trial and error. What else are you concerned about? Soarin' is very mild, not jerky at all. The new MS option is great! I have not tried Dinosaur, but if you can stand a bumpy car ride without drugs I would think you could handle it. Any others? My dh is not a coaster lover, my oldest teen does those alone. He does do ST and Dinosaur with them, I just wait on the nice cool benches!

From time to time I do get car sick. I've never lost it on a car ride though. I just get really woozy and a bad head ache, um and my face kinda turns ghostly lol. But, I am fine on airplanes. I get concerned about any ride that I haven't gone on before because I just never know how a ride will hit me.

Things like Alladin's Carpent and dumbo really concern me because, I went on this ride at a fair once. It was a bunchg of swings that just went around and around and I lost in on the ride. I can still hear the crowd. UGH!! DID YOU SEE THAT!!! HA HA HAAAAAAA. I think I've been tramatized ever since and have been overly cautious since then. If some people don't get drowsey on dramamine maybe I should try one a couple of hours before I go to bed to see how I do with it. I am definately trying the ginger too on our next trip. If I get sick I'll just take the bus back to the room for a nap while they stay in the park.

Dumbo and the Magic carpet are nothing like the swings. I can ride anything, including mission space, although one time I did get nauseated because I did not follow the directions and was looking around. I was also a figure skater in my prior life and could spin like crazy, really good at the merrygoround thing at the park etc.........I CANNOT however ride those swings. They look so benign, but would ruin my whole day. I cant even swing very long on a park swing. I really do not think Dumbo will make you sick. Another tip is peppermint, not as good a ginger, but much more easily found if you are not feeling so good. You could request a scapolamine patch from your doctor if you really have trouble with motion sickness. Same as used on cruises, you wear it the whole time. I also have heard the smoking an illeagal substance works really well for nausea and amusement park rides, however I cannot recommend this nor is it remotely legal, nor do any of us want to explain this to our kids at the happiest place on earth. :lmao:

I can't do the Teacups either and I didn't try Mission Space and don't intend to any time soon. The only simulator ride that affected me was Star Tours, but last time I rode it, I was perfectly fine.

I've never been able to do rides that spin though, so I steer clear of them :)

Good luck.

I learned the hard way in high school that I could no longer tolerate the spinning rides. Just watching them makes me ill. I can't even play Ring Around the Rosie for long! I can normally handle roller coasters just fine, though. However, I wanted to warn you about Expedition Everest. (Sorry if this has already been mentioned.) Everyone I knew who had been on it talked about how awesome the ride is. Part of the ride goes backwards, and when my DD and I rode it, we couldn't wait for it to be over. We were both sick afterwards and needed to rest awhile. I don't think we will be trying it again.

(I haven't even attempted Mission Space!)

I had never heard about taking ginger for motion sickness. I'll have to keep it in mind.

The first time I bought it and up chucked on a ride was the swings too. :lmao: That ruined everything, because I turned backwards to look at my sister. Ummm...shouldn't have done that.:crazy2:

Anyway, I just don't go on any rides at all. I can do the ferris wheels at the local fairs and I was thinking of risking Big Thunder Mountain or Goofy's ride. My poor DH has to take the kids on most of their rides. I get to go shopping while they are on a ride. I'll carry a small plastic bag in my pocket to make sure I have something in case it happens on the ride.

I'm going to do ginger and one of those bracelet pressure point things. I tried Dramamine and Bonine. Neither were effective. Actually, Dramamine seemed to intensify it. I went to the dr to get the patch for my last trip to China. That intensified it also and I refused to touch it after that. I will just do the ginger and bracelet and see what happens. I just got to look for a great product to try.

I've tried Body Wars and those sitting down type rides and they were horrible. I was feeling sickish the rest of the day after going on Body Wars. You get jerked around and go up and down while the screen is coming at you. YUCK! Any old timer/pace maker rides? I'll be looking for those.

Edited: to add that I know someone (DH's coworder) who's from India and said it's a joke that we have all those OTC drugs for motion sickness, when ginger has been something that's been proven to help relieve motion sickness. I say if the OTC stuff works for you, then keep with what works. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for everyone, so it's good to know there's alternatives to try.
