Well Elaine, as always you give me some wonderful words of wisdom! :thumbsup2 My multi-vitamin has 400mg of folic acid, so I will just stick to that.

Still looking to hear from any of you ladies about birthing centers. I'm about over my medical insurance. :sad2:

Hi everyone, hope everyone is doing well.

I don't know anything about birthing centers either, we don't have any here in our town, sorry.

That's funny, because you made me think about a friend of mine, she went in to labor at home and made sure the baby was born just before an ambulance was called, so she didn't have to pay for delivery. She did this with her 2 youngest children at over 40 years of age. She nor her husband had any insurance and I think he was the only one that worked and it wasn't a very good job. This woman was nuts anyway, but that is a whole other story.

I have always been told that you need to take 800mcg of Folic Acid a day if you were TTCing or pregnant. My Pharmacist said that there is a low iron prescription Prenatal vitamin now available, because I have trouble taking alot of iron. I take straight Folic acid 800mcg, because the Prenatals cause tummy troubles, I get 250 tablets for like $4.00 at Target.

I'll look into those vitamins at Target. I want to talk to my new OB/GYN first and find out what she thinks.

DH and I have insurance.....$10,000 in coverage, but I just wanted a bit more. We have savings accounts, 2 of them as a matter of fact, and he gets money for going to school, so I'll just have to learn how to budget even better now before the little one comes along.

Helenabear quoted me some pretty low numbers for her hospital and I'm sure I can find out what it will cost here before looking into birthing centers although I've heard they are 100 times better in some areas.

I work in a hospital and her price seems about right, it depends on the doctor and what their fee is. The OB/GYN's set their prices individually here. The hospital also offers a discount to anyone that has to pay out of pocket or a large amount.

I've been taking OTC prenatals since going off of BCP. My OB/GYN told me to take OTC prenatals now, and then when I get pregnant she'll prescribe some. I just checked mine, and they have 800mg of Folic acid. I take the Target brand and never had a problem.

Still trying to catch my breath here, I have another slightly down day and I hope to catch up at home and all that soon.

I wonder why the doctors are advising for double the amount of folic acid. I checked the spina bifida site and they also only want 400mcg. http://www.sbaa.org/site/c.gpILKXOEJqG/b.2016945/k.2321/Spina_Bifida_Association_Web_site.htm
I might be odd here, but I have real issues with taking too much of something. Too much of some vitamins can be harmful and I sadly just won't risk it. If we actually had more of a risk for it, I might take more.
My doc and NP also told me after I got pregnant what I was taking was great. She's a younger doctor too so I know it isn't just "set in her ways" Then again my friend in Mexico didn't take pre-natals either and had a healthy baby. Just a regular vitamin. They don't do pre-natals there (drug companies pushing it maybe?) Just rambles here...

That was a cute link there. I loved it!!!

Denise, I might call the hospitals and get a quote. Like I said that was the amount I was given in writing by my doctor for Ohio State's hospital. Some of the things that add up though that aren't in delivery are the costs of the tests. I cannot find my packet to get you exact costs, but the ultrasounds and blood tests aren't cheap

Hi All,

Since we are on the topic of prenatal viatamins, I thought I would take the opportunity to obsses over something slightly related. Ever since I started taking my OTC pre-natals, I will occasionally get a weird gassy, AF like cramp. Ever since I ovulated, I have been having the feeling a lot, and I have a mild dull ache in my uterus. I thought it was just the pills giving me problems, but when I read the cute "pricelessness" story, I scanned some signs of PG. Oh my goodness, that is a big one!! I am not getting my hopes up, but...... I have to admit, I POAS yesterday. Of course, it was bfn. I promise to wait at least 5 more days before I do it again:). Thanks for letting me ramble about something that is probably just in my head.

Have a great day!!
Jennifer

Jennifer, what cycle day are you on? As you have probably gathered from everyone's banter here, it is entirely possible to get BFN's if you are testing too early. Good luck!

Denae

I am 6 DPO. I knew it would be negative, but I found that I have replaced my Diet Coke obsession with a POAS obsession. LOL. I went to dinner last night with a girlfriend that said she got her bfp @ 3 days after her O date so I thought what the heck. I knew it was going to be negative b/c it wa sso early, and I wasn't at all disappointed when it was, but I had this inexplicable desire to do it. Oh well, thanks for giving me a heads up not to be disappointed and to keep testing later. You all are the best!

I didn't test until two days after I missed my period and even then the line on the first test was light. It's hard not to POAS though. One month I took like 9 hpt's. :lmao: But that bloated, gassy, pms'y feeling was the only sign i had of pg, and i thought it was just pms.

Well this afternoon I'm going to meet with the nurse and have the blood test to confirm the pregnancy. I don't know why but I'm just nervous they'll tell me that I'm not really pregnant or something. I just want to go ahead and get it over with NOW!

Lots of hugs and babydust to everyone!

Don't be nervous. It's going to be great!!!!!! I am so excited for you.

Jennifer - do you mean 6 days past when you ovulated or 6 days past the day you got your period. It's pretty unlikely you would get a BFP at either of those times, so don't feel badly.

When I was testing all thetime, DH was getting really irritated at all the money I was spending on tests. And you couldn't just get one BFN, you had to get at least two, so you had to buy the double pack every time.

It's a wonder that OB/GYN's and RE's don't jsut give those things out for free. Heck, we're spending enough money there.

I went to my GYN this week, and I asked her to run some bloodwork. My thyroid function and blood sugar levels are good, but my cholesterol is really high. I need to do something about it - like diet and exercise. But she suggested that since I have a family history, and don't plan on having more kids, I should see about a cholesterol-lowering drug as well. Heck, I'm only 36!!! Crap!

Ash- Still sooooo very excited for you. Have you been feeling better lately? What about your thyroid issues in relation to your pregnancy?

Denae

I can tell you the whole bill for a hospital will run about $3000 for natural (with drugs) and $3400 for a c-section at my hospital.

I just got my hospital bill in the mail, and the total was over $15K for a c-section (had induction & epidural first) and 3 day hospital stay. Luckily I only have to pay my insurance deductable of $250, and that includes the pre-natal care as well. Does anyone know why the price is so much higher?

Wow, that is expensive compared to here!!!! I had gotten the estimated bill (my doctor's office does that so you can save up and make payments if needed) and then what my insurance would require me to owe (less than $150 for the birth and stay itself) when I was at about 8 weeks along. This is a service my doctor does so we wouldn't be shell shocked. I wonder if mine was the reduced amount and not the "full" that you saw. Hospitals do charge more and then teh insurance works them down. Though even if you double what mine said (assuming it was the insurance agreed on price) you still are looking at about $6-7K per birth.

Jennifer, I was curious if you meant CD6 or DPO6 as well. I owuldn't imagine at CD 6 that you could have conceived anyway... possible, but very early to tell. DPO6 would be very possible to have the symptoms already. I felt first symptoms 4DPO and at about 9DPO I felt my first uterine twinges. At 12DPO they were very strong.

It's expensive to have a baby!!!!!

I am 6 days past ovulation. I am on cycle day 23. I'm so sorry, I mistyped and confused everyone. I knew there was no way I was going to get a positive. I shared the story because I knew I wouldn't get a positive, but it made me feel better to actually take the test. I'm crazy, I know. I really have to work on this patience issue I have;) The twinges are probably just realted to my PNV, but I am really hoping that this could be it. I'll let everyone know either way.

Denae: I have two friends taking cholesterol lowering medicine and they are 34 and 36. I think it has as much (maybe more) to do with genetics as it does age. Good luck on getting it down!

Have a great weekend!
Jennifer

Jennifer - thanks! That actually makes me feel better. Both of my parents have high cholesterol, and we don't really have a bad family history of heart issues. My grandmother died of a heart attack, but she was well into her 60's and had a litany of other heath problems.

Elaine - I wonder if the cost you were quoted was the OB's fee only, and did not include anesthesiologist costs, OR costs, a longer hospital stay, etc. I find it really hard to think that a C-Section would only cost $400 more! and what a difference from Pollito's experience!

Ash- Still sooooo very excited for you. Have you been feeling better lately? What about your thyroid issues in relation to your pregnancy?

Denae

I had my thyroid medicine adjusted about three weeks ago and I asked about it while I was at the doctor's and they said that they will just check it more often to make sure that my levels stay normal throughout the pregnancy.

Well it's official now, I'm really pregnant! I have my first prenatal appointment on April 17. My due date is December 2nd! :woohoo:

Having a baby is expensive!!!! We went over that stuff today too, and my insurance deductible is really high so my DH is going to freak out when I tell him about the monthly payments. I think I'm going to have to preface it with, "Because I am pregnant, they told me at the doctor's office not to get anxious or worried and so you have to be calm and not pitch a hissy or do anything that's going to make me that way. Now about the money..."
