I am trying to plan a family trip to Universal for 2016. I want to plan it for as early in the "summer" season as possible (late May through early July) but also want to plan it for when this new attraction opens. Does anyone remember when early summer attractions have opened to the public in past years?

Despicable ME opened July 2, 2012
Transformers opened June 20, 2013
Gringotts July 8 , 2014
Forbidden Journey June 8 ,2010..My guess is they are hoping for late June/early July 2016 opening.

I heard originally they were targeting May but have had some delays, so probably June.

If you want to book now before definitive word is out, my suggestion is to book it for the last time period possible. That way your odds of it being open is greater.

Thanks everybody!
We were lucky a couple of years ago. We were able to test Forbidden Journey during a soft opening when crowds were super low. Would love to do that again with the new attraction!

King Kong looks SO COOL! Was thinking of returning to Universal in summer of '16, but now with Volcano Bay opening in '17, we will wait till '17...Hope that Volcano Bay opens up by May '17...Like to vaca in May to "beat the summer crowds"...LOVE water parks, so guess we will defer the trip till '17....I am sure Volcano Bay will be AWESOME!:Pinkbounc

Any word on what type of attraction this will be?

Hopefully it's not based on on the 2005 film. :crazy2:

It is based on Skull Island and likely the 2005 film plus the new movie that will be coming out( Kong: Skull Island, 2017)
I think it is supposed to be a mix of dark ride, 4d and motion simulator
I loved the 2005 movie and the 1933 version.I hated the Jessica Lange version

I'm the other way. I loved the 1933 and 1976 versions, but hated the 2005 version.

I wonder if it'll be similar to Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom?

Me too!!

I adore old black and white movies and how bad they can be sometimes......but that almost makes them so good too........iykwim.....lol.......Don't remember much of the Lange one now as I haven't seen it for many years but I have Faye Wray on DVD........classic!

Didn't even finish the 05 one.

I could watch the '33 one over and over. Same with the '76 one. I like how they updated Kong and made it contemporary. Even though it filmed in the '70s and took place in the '70s, it still feels relatively current and relatable. The '33 one is more of a fantasy monster movie. Not quite as relatable, but still extremely enjoyable and a masterpiece of cinema.

The '05 one was an overly long, boring, lifeless, retred video-game-looking abomination. Just way way way too much cartoony CGI and most of the film was miscast. (Jack Black?!) I enjoy Black, but he's not right for certain roles.

All of the rumors I've heard suggest more of a Catastrophe Canton, Kilimanjaro Safari type adventure instead of Dinosaur. People on Orlando United posted that the ride vehicle will be based on this technology.

And the motion controls will be in the floor not the vehicles. The height requirement for the ride has been reported at 34". That's an inch shorter than Barnstormer.

So I wonder then if this will be a real E-ticket attraction, or if it'll be a lot more mild? Based on the two attractions you mentioned, it doesn't seem like it'll be too intense.

totally agree.
the movie of 05 was just blah to me.

I'm hoping like crazy the new 2017 movie will be a reboot and have nothing to do with the 2005 film. It takes place in the '70s, which is kinda cool, but I'm worried they're gonna just make it a sequel. I'd rather they treated this new film like Godzilla '14 and treated the '05 film like Godzilla '98 (where they ignored it completely).

They need to remember... Kong is more than just a giant gorilla. The '33 and '76 films got this. The '05 film made him nothing more than your average real life gorilla, supersized. 8-)

I don't think the movement will be as intense, I think it's going to go along the lines of a Haunted House with big effects to shock and impress.

I am going with a July opening.

The ride is going to be visually intense. Lots of giant monsters and scary scenes. Universal isn't going with a ride that's physically intense though.

Anything Universal has been building in the parks has be pretty awesome........so I expect Kong to be amazing too.

Can't wait until 2018 when we go back again and get to see all the cool new stuff!
