Any opinions on DLR? Disneyland Hotel vs GC?

We've stayed at GCH twice the past month and are heading back in a few weeks. We absolutely love its close proximity to the parks, as well as having many restaurants right down stairs. Our DD5 had a blast in the pool there, and its super conveniently-located as well.

Once you close your windows or slider, there is no noise from outside aside from jerks who talk loudly in the hallways...the inside doors do nothing to block the hallway noise. But I've never heard footsteps from the persons above or anything from the rooms on either side of us...so pretty quiet in that regard.

I've never stayed in a room that is right on top of DTD, however, so I cannot vouch for those. The music at DTD is about 1,000x louder than it needs to be at night (does anybody know the reason for this? same thing at CA), so I can't imagine anything really blocking that out altogether.

I agree entirely with the poster that advised to not pay extra for a park view, we didn't find it was worth the extra $$$ and frankly, hearing the screaming all the time was a little much.

We stayed at PP before, and wouldn't do it again if possible. The rooms were fine, but we really prefer the close proximity of GCH. Be advised that the rooms are small, your basic hotel-sized rooms. Depending upon the room you get, the furnishings can be quite worn. The last few times we stayed the towels were well beyond their useful life. I find the housekeeping to be mediocre at best, and at times pathetic and unacceptable...yet, we keep going back!!

You also see lots of celebrities at GC. Which could be good or bad.

I stayed at GC for Xmas Eve, the bell services brought my gifts up to me at 1am so I could have them out for the kids in the morning then we had Xmas lunch at the Blue Bayou. What a great day!!!

I stayed at GCH a couple of weeks ago with a DTD/fireworks view. You couldn't hear a thing if the slider was closed. Personally I adored the sights sounds and smells of DTD. :lovestruc The hotel is nice - especially the lobby. The service was great. But the rooms aren't all that impressive. They relatively nice are for the immediate DLR area and that location is to die for. But IMHO it is not a truly luxurious hotel - not like the Four Seasons for example. The room was kind of basic IMHO. Standard bathroom but with a granite countertop and nice woodwork. No duvets on the beds. just sort of basic overall.

But again, compared to all other hotels in the area it is fabulous. And the location is AMAZING. The turnstiles were seriously 4 minutes from our room if we used the fire escape exit.

Can't wait to buy into VGC!!!!

That sound heavenly. Wish I could do that, but I just couldn't stay away from the family (both Dh's and mine) Maybe one day.....

GC is a fabulous hotel and I loved it, it is also the closest to the parks and has its own entrance to the CAlifornia Adventure Park. I have not stayed at the DL hotel but, in my opinion if you have the points and can get the room stay at the GC.

We have also stayed at GC but, not DLH. We had a theme park view. GC is the closest to the parks. I will have to say....having your own park entrance is pretty cool. :goodvibes

I love, love, love, love the DLH. I have not staid at the California Grand, but I hear the rooms, once inside, are like a normal hotel room. My room was spotless and perfect and as a Disneyland lover, the decor of the DLH can't be beat with its subtle theming. I never expected towel animals at a non DVC resort and yet I think we got them at the DLH and not at SSR on our first trip home. The Neverland pool at the DLH is well themed for kids. I have staid at the All Star Movies and the DLH room I was in was definitely bigger and Paradise Pier is by far the longest walk of the three. From the outside the DLH is the oldest looking of the three but from the inside I think Paradise Pier, although more recently remodeled, feels like an older hotel. BTW for what its worth, I live in So Cal and I am a former cast member. So if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask! :) And have a great trip!!!

The points charts are not posted but MS has them, I just booked a room for June at the GC using points. If you are going in May you should be able to book on points as I was able to for June.

The last time I spoke to my guide he said the Villas are projected to open in the fall of 2009.

I was able to book four nights at the GCH for mid-next August using points. I think September is the expected date for DVC to open there.

I'm also interested in this thread because I have to book 4 nights in San Diego for the rest of our trip. I have no idea where to book, really.

I already joined the San Diego zoological society for my DH and me as it was cheaper to do that and get free admission and parking than to pay for the daily admission. To the OP, check it out at the San Diego zoo website.

The GC is our favourite DL hotel, hands-down. We like the others but we LOVE the GC.

We stayed at the DL hotel on our DVC points in August 2008, and will be staying at PP hotel very soon on our DVC points. We will also be booking February 2010 on DVC points, probably either GC or DL.

We're happy to be a DVC owners who can book DL hotels this way! The $/night on any of them are pretty steep - and for 160+ points/week (with no booking fee) we feel that this is a very good use of our points.

I live in SD, let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to help.

Staying at the GC in 10 days on points for our 25th anniv. I have heard a few negative things on another website (PM me for info) that would make me skip the DLH at this time.

Have stayed at both, but I love the GC. Had a parking lot view in concierge and still could see the park and mountains!!

We stayed at the DLH two weeks ago and everything, from the room to the cast members to the pool, was perfect.
