We are so desparate for nurses!! I just came off a 6-day/52 hour work week as we are so short-staffed!!!

The good news is....all 12 hours last night were overtime!!:bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

I think the neursing staff might be short cause the pay isn't there. You women work hard and are the backbone to the doctors. If it was for you nursing us back to health where would we be. I put you on rank with firemen, police officers and such. Cudos to you, you have a tough job:D

my hats off to nurses too...you guys do an incredible job and non of the glory....Hugs to you all!!

Hey, Kristy--

You wanna come work with us?? I regularly work 12-16 hrs extra every week, and am always asked if I want to work more (No, thanks).

The good news is, we make an addirtional 10.00 per hour (in addition to any OT, if we are in overtime) for working extra shifts.
It's still cheaper to pay us than to pay agency nurses. We use a lot of agency help and still work short a lot...

I don't see that changing anytime soon,either/

My eye is twitching just thinking about it:eek: Done it, and don't want to do it again:D Trouble is it's probably not going to change. Make sure you get some rest:D

Egads! Kristy! That's a lot of hours! I can't keep up with my family with the three 12 hour shifts I do a week! ( I try to give away all my call and rarely work overtime except for less than an hour here and there) How do you do it? I always thought you were SuperWoman with all you little ones, now I know for sure!!!! :D :D :D

It's the same here Kristy, right now a good majority of our L&D nurses are travellers and new grads. Many of the "old timers" (and I don't mean old in age--I mean RN's that were on L&D for years) left because L&D is just so hectic and stressful because we've gotten so busy, and we stay busy!

It used to be that you couldn't get an RN position in our L&D unit. Nobody ever left unless they moved or retired. Now we can't keep them long enough!

I'm even thinking of a career change because I just don't want to deal with stress anymore. :(

Been there, done that, have the t-shirt. I don't think I want to do it again.

I have been a medical nurse(you will now hear a collective EEWWW!!!!! from all those nurses who have ever worked a medical floor, as generally no one likes medical nursing...it's a stepping stone to the more exciting areas of the ER,ICU,L&D etc) for 19 years, and the last 8-10 it has gotten harder and harder, as the "bottom line" and not the patient is the focus. We are told to "do the best you can", but for our patients and families, that is not enough, and it wouldn't be for me either, if I was a patient or a family member. I don't truly think the general public realizes the gravity of the situation we are facing. I say now that if a family member of mine was in the hospital, I wouldn't leave them alone for any length of time. I can't imagine what it will be like in 10-15 years, when all of us who are "middle aged"(the average age of a nurse is 45:eek: ) are retiring and there are no nurses to replace us. Younger people (men or women) are not going into the profession. The lack of respect, the lack of proper compensation, the danger(there are only a handful of jobs where you run the risk of catching fatal diseases ona daily basis) are not attractive to most people.

It has always amnazed me that in this country, 20 and 30 year old men will get paid millions of dollars to hit a ball with a stick, or to throw a ball through a net, but those people who really contribute something to society(nurses, EMTs, firefighters, police officers...basically what I would call public service professions)get paid squat in comparison. Makes quite a statement about the values in our society, don't you think?

Yeah, well, SOMEBODY'S buying the tickets to pay those 20/30 somethings to play ball!

And you're right; there is money for those activities but no one seems to want to pay for health care (what do you mean my insurance doesn't cover that?) or work very hard to maintain their own health. But, some people have big $$$$ for Botox parties too. Talk about being shallow. Go figure.

I hear you Disney Doll!! I can remember working on a medical floor and still passing my 9:00pm meds at 1:00am:eek: I had so many patients that I had a hard time seeing to all patients. No one could help, most of them had their own patients to deal with. I also remember a young man complaining about abd pain, the HO was called several times and when I left still hadn't come, the man died the next day. I forget the diagnosis:confused: but the whole episode was very upsetting. I left soon after that. I needed a job where I could go home with a clear conscience, not one where I would check the obituaries to see if any of my patients were there:(

You're right,fkj2, somebody is paying big bucks for tickets so those guys can play ball. That's exactly why I wonder about what the values are in this society. Seems messed up to me.
