Any medical students (or spouses, parents, etc) getting excited for Match Day 2006?!

Just wanted to say I'ved enjoyed this thread and to wish everyone luck. We're not in the medical field, but we know what it's like waiting to hear where you're moving next (construction field).

It's funny that someone said they think Rochester is small and isolated. Most people I know wouldn't think so. The population is estimated at 93K and it's only 90 miles from Minneapolis.

We moved from Dallas to Pierre, SD a couple of years ago. Talk about culture shock!! It's so small!! You have to drive 2.5 hours to get to a Target. And it's a state capitol that only has a volunteer fire department.

All depends on what you're used to I guess.

Also just wondered how often people do their residency at the same place they go to med school? My doc in Iowa was just a few months older than me and in his first couple of years in practice. He was a local guy that went to Iowa for med school, did his residency there, then got a job in a practice close to where he grea up.

It all sounds very exciting!! :Pinkbounc

Malibuconlee, you're right, Rochester is large in terms of its population, but after having been there, I would have guessed the population was around 20,000 cause it did not seem so large to me (though I heard it was around 80,000, not that it makes a big difference). We live in DC now, so way more than 90,000 people, plus you leave DC and you're surrounded by other pretty big towns. Once you leave the town of Rochester, there is nothing for many miles. We drove towards Iowa and stopped in Austin, MN, home of the SPAM museum, and that was the nearest 'town' in that direction and it was very, very tiny. So after 4 years in DC, 4 years in Baltimore before that, and growing up in northern NJ, 17 miles from NYC, that 75 miles from Rochester to Minneapolis seemed like forever! Of course, my husband still loves the Mayo Clinic so we're currently battling out what our #1 will be. BTW, his #2 choice right now is GW and that's where he goes to med school, so he might end up staying there for residency too.

Lecach, our friend is ranking Duke #1 in emergency medicine so maybe you'll end up selling your house to them!

Justthat, I can totally understand the small town culture shock you would have. If I ever win the lottery, I'll let you show me NYC, and I'll show you the town on 900 in Southeast Iowa my DH grew up in. :thumbsup2

We're back from our trip of second looks, etc.... and the list is being certified tonight! :thumbsup2

Just over 3 weeks.....

We did ours today, but I still feel so conflicted about it. It's insane. We ranked GW #1, and I love DC and really want to stay here, but I feel really bad about putting a much better hospital (the Mayo Clinic) #4 on the list. I'm glad we have till 9pm to change it if necessary. We've got GW, Thomas Jefferson (in Philly), the Cleveland Clinic, then the Mayo 3 and 4 year programs as our top 5. Seems sort of stupid though to put GW first when #s 3 and 4 are better hospitals. Ugh, I just wish this whole thing were over!

I understand that! We ranked Cincy first, which is among top programs for med-peds..... but after that, we have a few spots that are very ok in comparison, and then another fantastic program at #5, just because I'm not up for moving 14 hours away. Oh well.... you have to be happy, and the education is going to be so close as long as the hospitals are at least noteworthy! :goodvibes

So close, though! It's finally almost here!

Only a few more days for you guys. I know you must be nervous wrecks.

Remember - if any of you get matched with Duke our house is for sale. Although I dont think we're going to have a problem selling it -we already got an offer yesterday from some current residents (at UNC-Chapel Hill) but its not a great deal.

Here is a link to our realtors site - our MLS number is 850874:

Oh my gosh can I move to NC!?! Your house is so nice and I can't even tell you how much cheaper it is than anything we're looking at here in DC that's the same size! And yours is a house-we're mostly looking at condos and townhouses cause real houses are unaffordable. So we'll end up with a condo about the size of your house, or a bit smaller, with maybe 1 parking space or possibly just searching for street parking, for around $750,000-$900,000 and then we'll have to pay condo fees on top of that! You have just made me realize how ridiculous living in DC really is!

justthat: come on down, we'd love to have you! Its a great area to live. The best mall is only 2 miles away. Duke and Carolina are both close. The airport is 15 minutes away. The weather is great too. Its going to be 84 today.

You have no idea how much I wanted to move to NC! My husband did apply to Wake Forest, but then ended up not being able to interview there so that ended our NC chance. He really liked Wake Forest, but couldn't fit in the interview cause they called him later on in the process after he already had others scheduled and couldn't get a date that worked. And my husband's laziness got in the way of him applying to Duke or UNC cause they do tons more work than Wake Forest. Don't even get me started on that.... Our friends ranked Duke #1 and UNC #2 so they have a good chance of winding up there and I'm so jealous! I really love the area and it was one of my top places but didn't work out for us unfortunately. Don't get me wrong, I love DC, but it's so expensive that we'll be spending our whole salary on a mortage payment!

We also ended up cancelling our interview at our only Carolina school. I'll keep an ear out though, for any of DH's friends that may match in the area. Good luck selling your house! :goodvibes

Thanks Jennifer and Justthat! Feel free to share our house info ;). Im sure next weekend will be a huge sales weekend locally - wouldnt you expect that a lot that get matched will come on in to town to start looking? I sure would if it was me, but then again I am not very patient.

I'll be thinking of all of you on Wednesday!

We matched!! Of course, I think it's just as annoying to know that we matched but not know where till Thursday, but at least we don't have to scramble.

Just curious -- are those of you who are hoping to be matched planning to visit the schools this weekend to start looking at housing? Or will you wait a while? Does it depend on how far away it is from where you currently live?

If it was me I dont think I could wait.

We definitely won't be going this weekend. Depending on how far away it is, we'll start looking into something in the next few weeks. If it's farther away, we might not even travel somewhere for a month or more. As far as we plan (not sure about others), we willl want to do some research (neighborhoods, prices, etc) before we'd take a trip, since we won't be able to go back and forth to look.

Sorry that I can't promise you the match will send a big influx of people your way that quickly! I'm sure it will in due time, but I know it must be frustrating to wait! Good luck with your sale, though, whenever! :wizard: :goodvibes

Well our friends who want to go to NC are planning to go next weekend to look for houses. We've been looking for the past few weeks since we think we'll be staying where we are so if we do end up staying here we've found a place we love and will make an offer on Thursday. We're going to WDW on Friday so that would rule out visiting anything this weekend. If we don't stay in DC, we'll have a year to find a place in probably Philly so no rush there (we'd be in DC or NJ for the 1st year which is why we'd have the time).

Great thread, I feel like I'm eavesdropping. Misc comments.
My DD has plans to be an orthopedic surgeon. She fractured her fibula playing B-Ball and whala found a career direction. She is just a Sr. in high school and has a long way to go, but she was accepted at the only college she applied to so that's a good thing. She is majoring in Biology (I guess that makes since right?). She is working 3rd shift foaling out mares on Mondays and Fridays, I think of it as good practice for residency.
justhat - We love NC too, (I'm surprised my DD didn't apply to Duke or NC) we go there every summer, to Lake Lure. My ex-SIL graduated from Duke ob-gyn but we won't hold that against NCer's ;) I am not at Mayo clinic fan, done that and not going back. jmho so I'm glad you downgraded it - I (again personally) think that was wise.
Thanks for sharing, I appreciate the glimpse of my DD's future (if that's what she ultimately wants) I hope you all get what you want, it will be exciting to see your posts. Peace and best wishes where ever you go.
