any hotel recommendations for NYC?

Next spring, me and 4 girlfriends are going to NYC for a few days. This will be our first time there. We've started looking at hotels and areas, but there are just so many to choose and we don't know what area we should be looking. We want to be close to the action, so would that mean Times Square?
TIA!

Yeah...the tourist action. How old are you guys? If you're planning on doing any clubbing or going to restaurants other than TGIFridays or Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory, I would avoid Times Square like the plague!!

OK, interesting. 2 of us will be turning 30 which is why we're going. The others are in their 30's. What area would you recommend?

If you've never been, you should stay in Times Square. I like the Marriott Marquis right in the middle of the action, and was able to get it for $150/night via Priceline last year.

Yep - have to agree w/you on this one!! And, even if I were going clubbing or to those stupid chain type restaurants, I'd still avoid Times Square like the plague!

I like staying Central Park West area myself. Fortunately, I've been able to stay on "company" funds (when I worked in advertising) ... and have stayed at the Plaza and Waldorf Astoria on a regular basis. You kind of get spoiled staying there!!!

Have fun and ask the locals where to eat. Please, please, please do not get sucked in by TGIFriday's (I could tell you stories about the one in Times Square - my niece worked there) and Bubba Gump. Go to Chowhound and get some good tips on where to eat from there!

Have a great time!

Sorry, but there's nothing worse than looking like a tourist in NYC. You can spot 'em a mile away. You want to blend when you're in NYC, not stick out like a sore thumb!

we have stayed at Crown Plaza and at the Doubletree Suites in Times Square area (we are tourists ;) !) and both were nice. Are you going to any shows while you are there?

Perfect...I would stay somewhere midtown west (but away from the Theater District) to Downtown. If you want superhip and or trendy, I would stay at the Hudson www.hudsonhotel.com. It's been around for awhile, so it's not that expensive, but it still packs a punch for people who are looking to party. Ben Affleck threw Matt Damon a party when we were there for a few months ago. The rooms are a bit small (typical of NYC) but the atmosphere is great! The concierge there will be much better than the stiffs at the Marriotts and can help you finding a great assortment of trendy fun restaurants and/or clubs.

Edit: Like any good DISer knows, don't pay rack rate for your room, go to outside sources like Travelocity, etc. for much better rates!!

But wouldn't you rather see the city like a New Yorker? Believe me, it's nothing personal...women in their late 20's-early 30's, Times Square is nowhere I'd want to be, unless I was going to a show, which is what subways and cabs are for!
