I thought I read once that Disney had a Hawaii DVC or hotel that DVC members could use pts for. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

I see that Kapalua Bay Hotel, Maui & Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows, Big Island, are in the Concierge Collection. Anyone been to these?

Haven't done Concierge, but we have an exchange to the Kona Coast Resort II next year. TUG gives this resort a pretty good rating, and we got the exchange for only 160 points, so we felt lucky. :)

Hi DL Visitor,

While DVC does not have a resort in Hawaii, there are quite a few opportunities to exchange your DVC points with II for Hawiian accomadations. From what I hear, they are really nice. We plan to do this exchange in a few years when our son is older.

THanks for the replys. I know about II & RCI. I have heard that the Kona Coast is great! Would love to hear from you when you get back. I have a Oahu t/s that I can trade, which in 2000 I traded and got to Embassy Suites in Maui (this is a GREAT place). I just thought Disney may have had something of their own. Wishful thinking :)

DLVisitor, we spent a week at Mauna Lani in June and it was incredible. As a matter of fact, we are now planning a spring break trip in 2002 to the Kapalua Bay Hotel on Maui.

Dear Allen:
Did you get just a "hotel" room? We looked at the resorts web site...BEAUTIFUL! The$4200 a night "bungalows" looked wonderful! Would the room fit a family of 4 (grown children, 18yom & 21 yof)?

We're pretty excited that we were able to get a 2br in Princeville on short notice. We just called a couple weeks ago for June. We got the Bali Hai/Intrawest for 260 points. Tug rates it very highly. We've only been DVC members since 98 when we purchased on our WDW vacation and we've actually never used our points on Disney property since. We've exchanged each year, and all our exchanges have been wonderful. Looking forward to going to Boardwalk as soon as the baby is old enough for WDW.

Boo:

Spent December in Australia & Hawaii (Kauai). Hawaii was better (sorry all you Aussies out there!)

Kauai is fantastic! (This from a guy who never wanted to go to the islands, and now can't wait to get back!!!) Highly recommend the helo flights (Jack Carter runs a business Disney could be proud of!). Enjoy your trip! :)

DLVisitor,
We had a hotel room with a king size bed that was around 500 square feet in size. I'm pretty sure they have rooms with double beds that would accomodate 4. When we booked, they were offering 1 free night for every 4 nights you booked, and that helped with the points. The hotel itself is BEAUTIFUL. From all I've read, the Kapalua is as nice as the Mauna Lani (we are planning on being there March 2002.)

We are psyched!!! Did you do any good Na Pali boat tours?

Has Kauai recovered from the huricane? We were last there 6 years ago and it was in bad shape. We traveled to the big island for the first time that year, and loved the variety there. Our first trip Kauai was our favorite. :)

Yes. We were in Kauai in July 2000.

Aside from a couple of hotels that never reopened and are expected to be torn down and replaced by new timeshares (the former Stouffer Waiohai at Poipu and the fabled old Coco Palms), there is no obvious evidence that Hurricane Iniki did such terrible damage in 1992.

badeacon & Allan - When you stay at the Kapalua Bay Resort, have dinner one night at their Bay Club restaurant. It was one of the finest moments of our Hawaii trip. We sat on their deck, and it was around sundown. We had a really great dinner while watching the sun set behind Molokai, which is just across the bay. Sublime!

It was about 5 years ago, so the Bay Club may have since gone downhill, or out of business all together. But it sure would be worth checking out.

Boo:

No on the boat rides. December is a bit rough on the sea and my wife tends towards seasickness even when calm. Highly recommend the choppers. Way cool experience, even if very spendy!

Diane:

When we were on Kauai 12/00 we saw no obvious signs of hurricane damage. Some locals spoke of things, but if they weren't pointed out you would never know!

Thanks! When we were there in 95 it was pretty bad yet. The big Norfolk Island pine on the north end of the island looked like big bottle brushes with branches stripped of and just starting to grow back. Lots of things were still closed. I am sorry to hear the CoCo Palms is still closed. That was always our favorite place to stay. We were told last time that someone from Minnesota had bought it and was refurbishing it. Maybe that didn't happen after all. They had the most wonderful grounds. The rooms had these giant clam shells for sinks! Each night they had a lighting ceremony along their canals. It was really magical.
