Any guesses why iMessage signs you out for some but not others?

My past 5 cruises this year every single cruise my iMessage works at first and then signs me out… I know this happens to others, but then not at all to some. Does any have any special tricks to keep this from happening?

I’ve started using WhatsApp and haven’t had an issue but I’d love to get it so my iMessage doesn’t sign me out.

I don't know that this is super helpful but we experienced this with my kids phones but not with my wife or I. The big difference is we use screen time to control our kids phones. One con to this is they can't adjust their time zone on the cruise because screen time locks that out. I have read that having the wrong time can log you out of iMessage. Not sure if you have been updating your phone's time zone during time changes onboard?

We were able to fix it with my kids phones when in port when we allowed them to connect to the cell service. My daughter didn't want to lose her Duolingo streak and we have cell service in Mexico and let her buy our carrier's international day pass for the day pass in one other port.

Everywhere we have been hasn’t changed time zones. I have my phone in military time, I doubt that would make a difference. The only time I didn’t lose it was on a 3 night on the dream. Then in May on the fantasy it never worked. Fantasy in May it worked 3 days. WhatsApp has been working fine for me for free. But I’d also like to have a back up. Maybe I’ll connect iMessage to my iPad and bring that one of my next cruises my husband and dog will be home for a week without me and would love to stay in touch.

I wish I knew. My husband and daughter have never had a problem, but on our last two cruise, right around day 3, BAM! I was signed out. So frustrating.

It’s very strange. One cruise I got signed out my husband didn’t then one we both got signed out. Different service providers too so that doesn’t make sense. Both iPhone 13th.

I did read where time zone makes a difference although I used it in Switzerland successfully for 2 weeks and my iPhone changed it's own time zone. (He's very smart . . ) I have also read that you need to make sure you are signed in to your Apple ID and I DO get kicked off of that every once in a while so bring your Apple ID password with you and make sure you are logged in to your account It's the top box with your name in it under Settings.

My problem is that having the password is irrelevant. I can't sign in unless I get on a cellular network again, which is pretty much not possible on a cruise.

I got signed out while sailing on the Fantasy in September. I stopped by guest services to check which tier internet I would need to purchase in order to access apple’s site to reactivate and they gave me a code for 30 minutes of free internet so I could reactivate iMessage at no charge.

That’s nice of time!

When this happened to me on the Fantasy in July, I had the free 50 MB plan and I had plenty left so I logged in and tried to get it to reset, but it didn't work. I needed to get on a cellular network to make it work again for some reason.

I know that this is probably somewhere else on these boards but what do you initially need to do to use iMessage to send/receive messages using iPhone? Do you need to sign up for ship wifi? Thanks.

That has been our experience as well. Both DW (iPhone 13 Pro) and my (iPhone SE) have sometimes dropped our Apple account connection and required that we log in again. We can sign back into the Apple account once we reach a port where I use my AT&T International Day Pass to connect to cell service and DW then tethers her phone to mine so we both have cell service for the port day. However, on the recent WBTA on the Magic, iMessage stopped working on a sea day, and DW was without iMessage until we arrived in Bermuda three days later. We had to use the message servIce on the cruise app to keep in touch onboard rather than using iMessage. The app messaging is not totally reliable.

I did this in the terminal while waiting to board. Put your phone in airplane mode. Now turn just WiFi on. Connect to the ships WiFi. Now you can use the DCL App to check events and use the built-in message function to communicate with members of your traveling party. But you should also be able to use iMessage and What’s App as well as Microsoft Teams. You don’t need to signup for an internet plan for this to work.

It happened to me on Day 2 of a 3-night Wish cruise in September. The craziest part was - I could still see the texts and reply via my Apple Watch, but not on my phone.

We had left our teens at home so you can imagine how silly I looked trying to stay in touch on my wrist.

On an unrelated note - it’s nearly impossible to text via Apple Watch after a tasting class! 🤣

Oh! Yes, I had forgotten that. I experienced that as well. Everyone got canned replies, "Yes!" "Talk later?" "Sure!" LOL.

Welp, it happened again, though this time it wasn't me, it happened to my daughter and my iMessage was fine the whole trip. It's so odd.

Lol this happened to me too on Day 3 of a four night!

I did a b2b in December where it was fine on cruise 1 and never worked on cruise 2. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Happened to us on the fantasy 8 night in October. My iPhone 12 worked the whole cruise - I could iMessage everyone back home. My husbands iPhone 14 didn’t work once. Settings the same in both phones. So weird.
