Going the end of September and looking for any rates out of Lakeland for car rental. Right now I have full size with Hertz for $200 taxes in. Anyone with any other better luck?

There are two rental car companies at Lakeland Linder Airport: Hertz and U-Save.

The official website has information about both: http://www.lakelandairport.com/

At most Hertz locations, the trick it to come up with a good rate code and/or coupon code. Employees of corporations can often use their Hertz corporate ID for personal travel.

U-Save is an unknown entity at this time. U-Save is a surprisingly large chain, but the Lakeland location is a franchise that just began in business in June of this year, coinciding with the beginning of DirectAir service. As with any franchise, if the local franchise owner is committed to great service and the location is well-managed, it could be a great choice. But, again, it's a new entity without a reputation or track record.

Anyone who willing to take a chance on DirectAir should probably also be willing to take a chance on U-Save.

For the time being, I'm sticking with American Air Lines into Orlando and National Car Rental when I get there. But that's just me.

Good point.

I believe AAA still offers Hertz discounts to members. COSTCO (in the warehouse) sometimes has flyers with discount codes for Hertz.

Hertz and U-Save should have hours early and late enough to accommodate passengers with reservations. They should extend hours, as necessary, to accommodate customers on a delayed flight. You can't expect such service from an offsite location.

Two agencies means less competition. The limited number of flights also suggests you might not see the deeply discounted, money losing rates, many of us are still able to book in MCO.

I don't have any info regarding U-Save but I'd be prepared to document my insurance coverage.

edited to add U-Save doesn't need to offer the kind of deeply discounted rates you'd normally expect from such an agency. They only need to beat Hertz by enough to appeal to price sensitive customers. Likewise Hertz doesn't have to lower rates to compete with other major agencies. A customer who wants to deal with a "name" agency may wind up paying a price premium.
