Any Garden Experts?

My dad gave me a basil plant in a little pot. It's about 6 inches high and has some good size leaves on it. For whatever reason I always end up killing herb plants. Not on purpose! Any experts that can help me keep this little guy alive? I know you're supposed to pick from the top and keep the soil moist and in a sunny spot.... is that all I need to know?

Coming from someone who kills just about everything, it is almost impossible to kill basil. I spent $45 early this Spring buying all the supplies and seeds for about 10 different herbs. Basil was the only thing that survived and I have a HUGE bush of it! My pot sits on the deck in the sunlight for the majority of the day. I water it every few days or when the soil looks dry. I don't know if I just got lucky but it is really thriving! Start looking up recipes to use for basil now. I have never had so much caprese salads, bruschetta, or spaghetti sauces in my life!
