I have the pleasure of taking on the adventure that is traveling from Los Angeles, CA to Orlando, FL with a large family of 11 adults and 1 infant for a Disney Cruise on the Treasure in September of 2025. I'm very aware that we're as close to our departure date in time, as we are physically to Orlando at this point.

Was just wondering if anyone has had experience booking "Group Rates" (10+) directly through the Airlines. Looking to hear about trials and tribulations, as well as perks and peeves. Are there any benefits, aside from cost? Does timing of our booking matter still? Also, I personally have no experience with traveling with either of the two airlines currently allowing quotes for our current itinerary of LAX to MCO, United or American (JetBlue/Delta guy here), so general feedback is appreciated as well.

Check with the airline. Typically group bookings let you change the name of passengers. Payment terms might not require payment in full at the time of reservation. Typically every passenger pays the same fare. Booking individually might result in some passengers paying less then the group rate.

Check regarding assigned seats and baggage policy.

Cost savings aren't a given. Think a kids friend can't make it. You can bring someone else. You can book now and might have time to collect from the group

It's been a few years, but if I remember correctly I had to give a deposit and then had to have all the names in by a certain date. I think when I initially called I got the rate...best best is to just contact a few airlines & talk to their group department for specifics.

When we flew to Italy with a large group a few years ago, our seats were assigned when we checked in. I wanted to lay to upgrade my seat and because I was booked with the group, was not allowed.

Can't help with the group booking question. But Delta has multiple flights from LAX to MCO daily. They are my favorite airline. I would definitely be looking at them for the airfare too. And if you have the Delta Skymiles credit card, you will have a free bag for up to 8 of you that are on the same reservation. That would save close to $500 round trip ($30 x 8 x 2), so a $60 annual fee would be worth it. I have flown United and American both from LAX to MCO and Delta flights have always been much nicer.
